World Optometry Day is observed worldwide on March 23 every year.[1] The day aims to raise awareness of the role of ophthalmology and optometry in improving eye health and emphasizes the importance of regular eye care.[2]

Optometry focuses on preserving vision, detecting eye diseases at an early stage, ensuring proper treatment, and promoting overall eye health.[3]

March 23 each year marks a global initiative to raise awareness about the importance of eye and vision care. The day recognizes the contributions of Optometry, promotes awareness about preventable blindness, advocates for accessible eye care for underserved communities, and encourages regular eye checkups through various events and activities held throughout the week.

History

World Optometry Day was first observed on March 23, 1986, at the initiative of the International Optometric and Optical League (IOOL). Notably, the International Optical League was founded in Berlin, Germany in 1927, and in 1969, it was renamed the International Optometric and Optical League (IOOL). Later, in 1995, the organization became known as the World Council of Optometry (WCO), with its headquarters in St. Louis. The WCO continues to emphasize the growing importance of optometry in global healthcare systems.[4] The organization promotes collaboration, education, and support to enhance global eye health and vision care.

Themes

To highlight different aspects of optometry’s role in global eye health and wellness, a specific theme is selected each year. Social media campaigns are encouraged to enhance public outreach and awareness.

2023

During the week-long campaign, the World Council of Optometry announced the theme: Expanding Optometry’s Role – The Time is Now. A series of programs and events were held from March 19 to March 25, focusing on this theme.

2024

The theme was: Advancing Optometry’s Commitment to Global Eye Care.[5] From March 17 to March 23, the focus was on expanding the reach of eye care worldwide and encouraging optometrists to adopt Integrated People-centred Eye Care (IPEC).[6]

2025

Eyes to the Future: Optometry Improving Global Wellness. The theme underscores the far‑reaching impact of optometry and its pivotal role in shaping the future of global eye care.[7]
