Will Borders is a British–Norwegian electronic music producer, game audio designer and esports entrepreneur. He is best known as the founder of the esports organisation Cactus Nexus Team (CNT) and for his work in interactive music systems that combine electronic production with real-time visuals and game audio integration.[1][2]

Borders' work spans original game soundtracks, interactive audiovisual systems built in Ableton Live and Max for Live, and the management of multiple amateur and semi-professional Valorant rosters in Europe.[3]

Early life and education

Borders was born in the United Kingdom and later lived in Norway.[1] He studied electronic music production at university, focusing on sound design, game audio, and interactive audiovisual performance.[4]

During his studies, Borders developed projects that combined digital signal processing, generative composition techniques and real-time visual feedback, using Ableton Live, Max for Live and game engines.[3]

Career

Music production and sound design

Borders began releasing independent electronic music projects in the early 2020s under the name Will Borders Music.[5] His work has been described as blending drum and bass, ambient textures and experimental rhythm design.[6]

In addition to solo releases, Borders has composed and produced original music and sound design for independently developed video games and student projects, working on in-game sound effects, ambience and adaptive music systems.[7]

His interactive audio work includes:

  • audio-reactive visual systems built with Max for Live;[3]
  • procedural music frameworks for games and installations;[8]
  • generative music software environments for live performance;
  • integration of real-time music and game state data for audiovisual artworks.[9]

Cactus Nexus Team (esports)

Borders founded Cactus Nexus Team (CNT) in 2024 as an amateur and semi-professional esports organisation.[2] Initially focusing on Valorant competition, CNT expanded into multiple rosters, including a main team and academy teams, alongside a staff structure of coaches, analysts and performance staff.[10]

Under Borders' direction, CNT has participated in online tournaments and regional leagues, fielding rosters in community events and Riot Games' in-client competitive systems.[11] The organisation has also expanded into:

  • CNT Academy and other academy-style rosters focusing on player development;[10]
  • Cactus Nexus Tournaments, a grassroots tournament brand organising online events;[12]
  • community and branding work, including merchandise, digital media and a Discord-based community hub.[13]

Borders serves as owner and operations lead for CNT, overseeing roster building, staff recruitment, branding and community-facing projects.[1]

Interactive audiovisual work

Alongside music and esports, Borders has produced interactive audiovisual works that integrate sound, generative graphics and performance tools.[9] His projects draw on techniques associated with visual music and contemporary audiovisual performance, influenced by artists such as Flying Lotus and Amon Tobin.[14]

Borders has developed systems that link audio signals to visual parameters, using envelope followers, spectral analysis and MIDI control to drive real-time animation, shaders and visual effects.[3] Some of these systems have been demonstrated in university showcases and public presentations on interactive music technology.[4][9]

Personal projects and entrepreneurship

Borders maintains several interconnected creative and community projects, including:

  • Will Borders Music, an umbrella for his electronic music releases and production work;[5]
  • Cactus Nexus Team, an esports brand with multiple rosters and sub-brands;
  • CNT Game Changers and CNT Agave, sub-divisions focused on specific rosters or initiatives;[10]
  • Cactus Nexus Tournaments, hosting community esports events.[12]

His work often combines audio production, branding, digital design and community management, positioning him at the intersection of music, interactive technology and esports entrepreneurship.[1]

Reception and influence

Within student and amateur esports communities, Borders has been noted for emphasising non-toxic team culture, player development and mental health awareness in the management of CNT rosters.[13][11] Educational and institutional documentation has also cited his interactive music projects as examples of contemporary workflows for audiovisual performance and game-related sound design.[4][14]
