WENDY is a Japanese rock band formed in Setagaya, Tokyo in 2020. They are currently signed to Victor Entertainment.

Overview

With the slogan "From Setagaya to the World," WENDY is a rock band that performs all of their songs with English lyrics.[1] Vocalist Skye McKenzie, who is half-British and half-Japanese, uses native English to drive their unique sound, which is based on 70s and 80s roots rock and hard rock, while incorporating elements of hip-hop and country.[2]

Driven by a sense of frustration and rebellion over the precious teenage years stolen by the COVID-19 pandemic, the band has garnered support not only from their own generation but also from a wide range of listeners.[3]

History

2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the members spent their days with local friends as their daily lives and activities were restricted. Amidst this, conflicts between different groups led to encounters with future members Johnny and Paul (Sena and Skye were childhood friends who met at a children's center). They deepened their relationship through a shared interest in music (such as a KISS T-shirt Johnny was wearing[4]), and gradually started hanging out together.

Later, the four had an opportunity to discuss their futures, and with music as their shared ambition, they formed the band in Setagaya, Tokyo, in October. A demo tape sent by Skye to Sony Music Publishing, which would later manage them, led to their participation in the company's artist development project. They then began their full-scale activities as WENDY.

In their early days, all members appeared in the movie GOLD FISH (starring Masatoshi Nagase, released on March 31, 2023), gaining attention alongside their musical activities. Afterward, they trained under music producer Shinichi Asada to improve their performance and expressive skills.

2021

In April, they held their first live performance at Shimokitazawa BASEMENT BAR. They continued to perform actively afterward.

2022

The band continued their live activities even during the pandemic, holding their first one-man live show at Shimokitazawa BASEMENT BAR, which sold out.[5] On September 5, "SHOW THE WORLD feat. Skye (WENDY)" was released as the theme song for KOSÉ 8ROCKS, the champion team of the professional dance league "D.LEAGUE," with Skye also co-writing the track. Additionally, songs released independently were featured on international playlists, gradually drawing attention to the band. Shortly after their formation, they performed at SUMMER SONIC 2022.[6]

2023

They performed at the large-scale outdoor rock festival METROCK 2023. On August 23, they signed with Victor Entertainment and made their major debut by releasing their 1st album Don't waste my YOUTH. The album was produced by Marc Whitmore—who won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year for Jon Batiste's We Are and produced The Black Keys' album Let's Rock—after they sent him a demo recording. It was recorded at Victor Studio in Tokyo. Utilizing an unedited live recording format to emphasize a live feel, the album received high praise for its raw and passionate rock sound, even being featured in the music specialty magazine SOUND&RECORDING.[7]

That same year, they gained attention through a wide range of activities, including performing at METROCK 2023, playing live in Seoul, South Korea, appearing in the movie GOLD FISH, and being featured on NHK WORLD's J-MELO.

2024

In October, bassist Johnny Vincent left the band. Since then, they have continued their activities with a support bassist.

From this year onward, they accelerated their overseas expansion. In October, they performed at the "OC JAPAN FAIR," one of the largest Japanese cultural events in Southern California, USA, establishing a foothold for their international development.

2025

They signed with the London-based UK label JPU Records and released a vinyl record.[8] In the UK, they held one-man live shows in Birmingham and at The Water Rats in London. In the US, they actively expanded their international presence by playing 5 shows on the West Coast, including at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles.[9]

2026

On April 25, a one-man live show is scheduled to be held at Veats Shibuya.
