Vanilluxe, known in Japan as Baivanillia (Japanese: バイバニラ), is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon media franchise, and the evolved form of Vanillish. First introduced in the video games Pokémon Black and White, it was created by British artist James Turner, with the design finalized by lead designer Ken Sugimori in promotional art. Classified as an Ice-type Pokémon, Vanilluxe is a large icy creature resembling a double-scooped ice cream cone with two faces and snow covering its body. Since its debut, Vanilluxe has appeared in various games, merchandise, and media of the Pokémon franchise, including Pokémon GO and the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

Conception and design

Vanilluxe is a species of fictional creatures called Pokémon created for the Pokémon media franchise. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, the Japanese franchise began in 1996 with the video games Pokémon Red and Green for the Game Boy, which were later released in North America as Pokémon Red and Blue in 1998.[1] In these games and their sequels, the player assumes the role of a Trainer whose goal is to capture and use the creatures' special abilities to combat other Pokémon. Some Pokémon can transform into stronger species through a process called evolution via various means, such as exposure to specific items.[2] Each Pokémon have one or two elemental types, which define its advantages and disadvantages when battling other Pokémon.[3] A major goal in each game is to complete the Pokédex, a comprehensive Pokémon encyclopedia, by capturing, evolving, and trading with other Trainers to obtain individuals from all Pokémon species.[2]

Receiving orders to create a new Ice-type Pokémon for Pokémon Black and White, the game's creature design team held a discussion regarding the matter and decided on an evolutionary line involving the multiplication of its form in some way. James Turner, a British graphic designer, suggested that the new Pokémon line could be based on an ice cream cone, which would gradually become a bigger two-scooped design. The concept was approved and Turner became the designer of the evolutionary line. Vanilluxe is the final evolution of the Vanillite species, evolving from the Pokémon Vanillish. Turner based the Vanillite line off of the idea of a monster referencing American food mascots, such as the Pillsbury Doughboy and Grimace, intending to capture a blend of them looking cute, creepy, joyful, and silly. Later, Turner's designs would be finalized by lead designer Ken Sugimori for promotional art of Black and White.

Measuring 4 feet and 3 inches (129 cm) tall, Vanilluxe is an icy creature resembling a double-scooped ice cream cone, with two faces and snow covering a majority of its body. In the game's Pokédex, it is described that the creature forms when two Vanillish stick together, following a daylight melting and nighttime freezing process. Vanilluxe's name comes from the merging of vanilla and "deluxe", while its Japanese name, Baivanilla, features the prefix "bai", meaning double.

Appearances

First found in Pokemon Black and White, Vanilluxe has appeared in most Pokémon titles since, including major games.

Critical reception

Initial reception for the species was largely negative, with many describing it as one of the worst Pokémon in Black and White and the franchise as a whole.

The design of Vanilluxe, and its prior evolutionary line, has contributed significantly to views on the species. Most critics and fans viewed its design as lazy.
