Draft:Vanilli

Vanilli (adj) is a neologism derived from common Romanian parlance to describe a ‘taste of vanilla’ in accordance with the culturally equivalent ‘vanilie’. Although not featured in the English Dictionary, the term has a wide appropriation in Romanian immigrant populations in East London.

History

The Romanian term ‘vanilie’ (noun) is derived primarily from the latin ‘vanilla’, a term prefixed of the plant responsible for the flavoured food additive. Its transition into the adjective ‘vanilli’ follows a similar principle to that of English colloquial derivations, such as ‘chocolatey.’

As such, its linguistic structure is incoherent paired with any object in each language, but well understood as the extension of such an object within immediate context. As such, the literal translation would be ‘this object has vanilla.’ The term is currently used to describe any foodstuff with a vanilla taste, but only within the context of noting the degree of flavour, so forms not just an adjective, but a inferred critique.

Current use The term is used widely in Romanglish, the colloquial term for mixed Romanian/English spoken by immigrants to the UK. First noted in the 1990’s, during the immigration boom to the UK, the word has gained some notoriety as a cultural lubricant and social signal between immigrants of second and third generation families, enough to warrant the creation of several shops including ‘Best Bakery in London: Custom Cakes by Lili Vanilli.’
