ValgrAI (Valencian Graduate School and Research Network of Artificial Intelligence) is a non-profit foundation based in Valencia, Spain. It was established in 2022 by the Generalitat Valenciana to coordinate artificial intelligence (AI) research and postgraduate education across the five public universities of the Valencian Community.[1][2]
History
ValgrAI was created as a public‑private partnership to promote AI research and training in the region. Its founding members include the Valencian regional government and the five public universities: the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the University of Valencia, the University of Alicante, Jaume I University, and Miguel Hernández University of Elche.[1]
In 2023, the foundation held its first annual awards ceremony to recognize outstanding students and researchers in AI from the region's universities.[3] That same year, Microsoft partnered with ValgrAI to offer AI training and employability programs.[4]
In 2025, ValgrAI launched Digital-IA, a program funded by the European Union's Next Generation EU funds, to provide free digital and AI training to residents of municipalities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants.[5] By early 2026, the program had expanded to include a competitive league involving 400 municipalities.[6]
In 2026, the Generalitat Valenciana approved an additional €4 million in funding for ValgrAI to expand digital competency training, particularly in rural areas.[7]
Governance
ValgrAI is governed by a board of trustees that includes representatives from the regional government, the five public universities, and private companies.[1] Its scientific council comprises international researchers, including Ramon López de Mántaras (founder of the AI Research Institute, IIIA‑CSIC), Virginia Dignum, Michael Wooldridge, Georg Gottlob, Hiroaki Kitano, and Carme Torras.[8][9]
Private sector partners on the board of trustees have included Microsoft, Pangeanic, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Baleària, Hidraqua, and Idrica.[10][11]
Activities
ValgrAI supports AI research and education through several programs:
- Postgraduate grants: The foundation finances study grants for master's degrees in AI and data science at the participating universities.[12]
- Annual awards: ValgrAI grants annual awards for outstanding master's theses and doctoral dissertations in AI.[13]
- Digital-IA program: A free training initiative for residents of small municipalities (under 20,000 inhabitants), funded by Next Generation EU, offering courses on digital skills and AI. The program aims to reach more than 17,000 participants.[14]
- Joint Research Unit: It coordinates a research unit that brings together researchers from the five universities to work on areas such as health, transport, and language technology.[15]
- Annual forum: The ValgrAI Scientific Council Forum (VSCF) is an annual event that brings together researchers and industry representatives to discuss AI ethics and applications.[16]
The foundation has also supported applied research projects, such as a collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Valencia to reconstruct the voice of an ALS patient using AI,[17] and a partnership with the municipality of Alcàsser to develop AI tools for citizen services.[18]
