Udo Erasmus is a Canadian nutrition educator and author known for his work on dietary fats and human health.[1] He is the author of Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill, a reference book on essential fatty acids, and is a co-founder of a nutritional supplement brand that produces plant-based oil blends, probiotics, digestive enzymes and greens formulations.[2]

Early life and education

Erasmus was born in Poland during the period of World War II. He later pursued his education and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of British Columbia, followed by graduate studies in biochemistry and genetics. He also holds a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology.[3]

Career

Erasmus started his career in nutrition and health in the early 1980s after experiencing pesticide poisoning.[4] He became known in the nutrition field for drawing public and professional attention to the biological importance of essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fats.[1] His work emphasised that modern diets often supply these fats in unbalanced proportions, which may affect cellular function. Through his writing and lectures, he contributed to broader awareness of EFAs in consumer nutrition and helped popularise the idea that the ratio and quality of dietary fats matter, not only the quantity.[5]

In 1994, Erasmus co founded Udo's Choice, a supplement brand offering essential fatty acids, greens powders, probiotics, and enzymes.[6]

Erasmus has delivered live presentations and media interviews internationally on topics related to nutrition and health.[7][8] He has also featured in podcasts and articles discussing essential fatty acids and nutrition principles.[9] He has authored notable books on fats, oils, and diet.[10]

Award recognition

  • In 2005, Erasmus was honored with the Willie Pelzer Memorial Hall of Fame Award by Canadian Health Food Association Hall of Fame in recognition of his work in nutrition and consumer health products.[11]
