Stankus was the most published Science Librarian in the world from 2011-2015, cited more than 350 times in professional/academic literature. Stankus joined the Special Libraries Association (SLA) in 1975 and served in multiple leadership positions within the organization, received the Rose L. Vormelker award and was inducted in the Hall of Fame for the SLA. His work in science librarianship is wide reaching and has made an impact on researchers, students, and other librarians.

Background and Education

Tony Stankus was born on March 9, 1951[1] to a refugee family from Lithuania. Stankus spent his childhood in foster homes throughout the northern United States near Worcester, Massachusetts. Stankus attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA, which was a Jesuit college where he originally planned to pursue a pre-law degree, but shifted to a path towards librarianship after a mandatory counseling session with the Jesuit priest.[2]

Subject's career

After graduating summa cum laude from Holy Cross College with a bachelor's degree in Russian, Stankus received a fellowship from the University of Rhode Island, where he earned his Master of Library Science degree. Stankus then returned to Holy Cross College where he served as a librarian for over 30 years and additionally served as adjunct professor of Special & Scientific Librarianship at the University of Rhode Island, then in 2007 he joined the University of Arkansas Libraries' staff as a science librarian.[3] Stankus spent over 16 years at the University of Arkansas, and retired in Spring of 2023.[4]

Subject's research interests and contributions to scholarly sources

Stankus contributes to a wide variety of science publications, and has had a hand in many different areas of science librarianship.[5] "Reviews of Science for Science Librarians" is a journal that demonstrates the contributions that he made that not only help researchers but have an impact on the field of information management and librarianship.[6] Some of his articles in Science for Science Librarians cover agriculture and a wide variety of sciences. Stankus' most significant area of focus is on the nature, history, selection, and management of scientific, life science, and physical science journals. Overall, his work bridges the gap between scientists, the publications they rely on, and the librarians who manage those resources. All of this work benefits students and researchers and facilitates robust discovery and scholarship.
