Tim Shelton (born July 19, 1989) is an American college basketball coach and former player who is an assistant coach for the Colorado State Rams. He has previously served as an assistant coach at Oregon State, Fresno State, and San Diego State.[1]

Early life and playing career

Shelton was born in Fresno, California. He is the son of former National Basketball Association player Lonnie Shelton and the brother of former National Football League offensive lineman L. J. Shelton.[1]

Shelton played forward at San Diego State under head coach Steve Fisher. Listed at 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 m), he wore jersey numbers 24 and 10 during his collegiate career.

He helped lead the Aztecs to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2010 through 2012, including a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.[1]

Shelton was a teammate of future NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard during San Diego State's rise to national prominence.[2]

In his senior season, Shelton was named to the All-Mountain West Defensive Team.[1]

Shelton also received media attention for creating and performing the song “Aztec Motto,” which was associated with the basketball program.[3]

Coaching career

San Diego State

Shelton began his coaching career at San Diego State under Steve Fisher as a player development coach. He was promoted to assistant coach for the 2017–18 season under head coach Brian Dutcher.[1]

Fresno State

Shelton spent four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Fresno State under head coach Justin Hutson.[4]

In his first season with the Bulldogs (2018–19), Fresno State finished 23–9 overall and 13–5 in Mountain West Conference play.[5]

During Shelton's tenure, Fresno State recorded multiple 23-win seasons, including a 23–13 finish in 2021–22 that concluded with a championship in The Basketball Classic.[4]

Shelton also served as recruiting coordinator and helped secure commitments including four-star guard Joseph Hunter.[6]

He departed Fresno State in 2022 to join the coaching staff at Oregon State.[4]

Oregon State

Shelton joined Oregon State in 2022 as an assistant coach.[7]

He departed the program in 2023 after buying out his contract to pursue further coaching opportunities.

Colorado State

Shelton joined Colorado State in 2023 as an assistant coach.[1]

In a 2024 profile by The Seattle Times, guard Nique Clifford credited Shelton's defensive coaching, stating that Shelton's “prowess as a defensive coach is what’s most salient.”[8]

Shelton is the son of former NBA player Lonnie Shelton. His brother, L. J. Shelton, is a former NFL offensive lineman.
