Theseus is a five-piece Metalcore band based in York, England. They blend contemporary metal production with nostalgic influences from the early 2000s metal scene, incorporating audio samples that reference significant cultural and historical moments, and a focus on presenting a bespoke live experience that complements their recorded versions of tracks, giving audiences a similar but seperate experience to enjoy live compared to their recorded works. Theseus bring a groove oriented edge of the modern metal sound, with more traditional 'Killswitch-like' metalcore guitar tones, overlapping modern production and mastering giving a slick, polished feel to an otherwise raucous sound. The band operate a home-made and self-funded approach, keeping all writing, recording and production in-house, even shooting and editing their own content and music videos, creating their own merch, and giving the band an authentic feel in a scene that has seen controversy surrounding AI overuse.
Key Information:
- Debut Album: The band released their debut album, titled It's Never Too Broken, on December 13, 2025. This was following 3 single releases: Their first standalone single Consume was released Nov 2023. WARPATH was the first single from their debut album, and was released Oct 15 2025, with Wake Up! - the 2nd single from the same album dropping Nov 17 2025. They celebrated the release with an official launch show at The Fulford Arms (considered the bands 'home town venue') in York on December 20, 2025, with support from Earthbound, Idle Eyes, and Chonky Dogg.
- Media Recognition: Theseus has featured on BBC Music Introducing, both locally on the Yorkshire and Humberside station with Jericho Keys featuring their single releases in late 2025, and an artist feature with live recorded performances recorded at York St John University tipped for early 2026. They also featuredon national radio from BBC Radio 1 Introducing with Alyx Holcombe playing WARPATH in early December 2025.
- Local Scene: The band has become a staple of the York metal scene, notably making it to the finals of the York Battle of the Bands in 2024.
- Name Origin: The name 'Theseus', is from the famous thought experiment 'The Ship Of Theseus', that questions whether an object remains fundamentally the same if all its components are replaced over time. The story centers on the legendary ship used by the Greek hero Theseus to return from Crete; the Athenians preserved the vessel in their harbor for centuries. As the original wooden planks rotted, they were gradually replaced with new, stronger timber until no piece of the original ship remained. This raises a central paradox of identity: if every part has been swapped, is it still "the" Ship of Theseus? Theseus the band had been known by another name 'Old Selves' until the current lineup was solidified after multiple changes in members, thus resembling the story of the ship from where its name is taken.
Members:
- Leon Thornton: Lead Vocals.
- Ben Parr: Guitar, Songwriting, Production, Backing Vocals.
- Ray Kilvington: Bass, Lyric Writing.
- Alex Newsome: Guitar, Songwriting.
- Aarron Johnson: Drums.
Equipment & Endorsements:
- Guitars: Ben and Alex use a mix of guitars from Caparison, Reiver, and Schecter, but have been seen playing Kiesel, Strandberg, NK and other modern metal guitar brands. The band utilises a Kemper PowerRack and Mooer GE300 for their live tones, with album sounds consisting of re-amp'ed DI's and live recorded takes from an ENGL Screamer 50, and Zilla Cabinets. Most of their debut album was tracked using a Caparison Dellinger Pro-fr 7 String. The guitars are all 7 string, and basses are 5 strings, which are all tuned up a semi-tone (F standard), with a dropped low string (A#), contributing to their unique sound.
- Bass: Ray uses Marcus Miller basses, but has been seen playing RedSub Colliseum FF5 / G4M 972 FF5 basses in previous live appearances. The bass tone largely consists of a Darkglass B7K.
- Drums: Aarron plays a Mapex Saturn 5 Piece Kit, with a mixture of Zildjian, and Myra cymbals. DW5000 series pedals. Aarron also has a custom kick drum cover with the Theseus logo made by Canadian cover company - Drumsknz.
- Backline: The band performs without any cabinets on stage, utilising a backing and click track which allows the band to stay in sync with pre-recorded samples, synth, guitar and vocal layers which help to create the bands sound live. All guitar and bass tones are created using ditigal gear, which is patched through a MacBook Pro using Reaper, an audio interface, and splitter with loom to get the sound from the stage to the audience via the PA system. This stripped back approach to live equipment reduces the bands dependance on less reliable analogue equipment, and ensures a high quality sound from venue to venue.
