The Miracle Morning is a personal development concept and daily routine created by American author and motivational speaker Hal Elrod. The method entails waking up early and engaging in structured morning practices that aim at improving mental clarity, productivity, health, and overall well-being.[1]

History

The concept of The Miracle Morning came to Elrod during the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis[2]. At the time, he had experienced setbacks, including the loss of more than half his income and clients, foreclosure of his home, and declines in his physical and emotional health.[3]

Based on his experiences during that time, he theorized that lasting external success required internal personal development. He then compiled his findings into a single, structured morning routine that he personally used to improve his personal and professional circumstances.

After his coaching clients reported similarly positive results, Elrod began teaching the system more widely.

Core Principles

Elrod quotes being inspired by motivational speaker Jim Rohn to study the habits of highly successful individuals and identified six core practices: S.A.V.E.R.S.[4][5]

  1. Silence – This practice promotes beginning the day with meditation, prayer, or quiet reflection to calm the mind and gain clarity and insight.
  2. Affirmations – The Miracle Morning followers are encouraged to repeat purposeful statements that reinforce goals, values, and daily commitments.
  3. Visualization – Through this practice, followers mentally picture desired outcomes and rehearse the actions needed to achieve them.
  4. Exercise – This practice encourages exercise to boost energy, circulation, and mental alertness.
  5. Reading – Followers should read personal development or educational material to stimulate growth and learning.
  6. Scribing (Journaling) – This practice entails writing reflections, goals, or gratitude to reinforce a positive mindset.

These six practices establish a framework for beginning the day in a peak state across four dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.[6] This, in turn, reduces the chances of people starting their day in a reactive state, which can spike cortisol levels and leave them mentally, emotionally, and physically depleted throughout the day.
