The House Must Win is a musical written by Irish singer-songwriter Mick Flannery, who composed the book, music, and lyrics. Directed by Julie Kelleher, the production premiered in April 2026 at the Pavilion Theatre in Dún Laoghaire, followed by a run at the Everyman Theatre in Cork.

The musical is based on Flannery’s 2005 concept album Evening Train and features a combination of songs from the original record alongside newly written material.

Background and development

The House Must Win originated from Flannery’s debut album Evening Train (2005), a narrative-driven work centred on fictional characters and themes of love, rivalry, and gambling.[1]

The stage adaptation was developed over several years, expanding the original material into a full theatrical work with additional songs and revised arrangements. Music for the production was arranged by Liam Robinson (Hadestown).[1]

Ahead of its premiere, the project was publicly announced alongside the release of a companion double album featuring material from the musical.[2]

Music

A studio album of songs from the musical was recorded in 2026, incorporating both newly written material and selections from Evening Train.[1]

The recording features guest contributions from artists including Anaïs Mitchell and Susan O'Neill.[1]

Synopsis

Set in a small-town environment, The House Must Win follows two brothers whose relationship is shaped by rivalry, shared romantic interests, and the influence of their absent father.

Both brothers are in love with the same woman, Grace, whose circumstances are shaped by family pressure and expectations. The narrative explores themes of ambition, control, and generational conflict.[1]

Production history

The production attracted media attention in advance of its premiere, including coverage highlighting the involvement of Tommy Tiernan in his musical theatre debut.[3]

The musical premiered at the Pavilion Theatre in Dún Laoghaire, running from 16 April to 3 May 2026, before transferring to the Everyman Theatre in Cork from 6 May to 16 May 2026.[1]

The production was billed as a world premiere musical.[4]

Directed by Julie Kelleher, the production featured a cast including Tommy Tiernan (in his musical theatre debut), Tabitha Smyth, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, and Niall McNamee.[5]

Reception

The House Must Win received coverage from several Irish publications.

In The Irish Times, the production was described as “gritty,” with commentary noting the scale of the material in relation to its staging.[6]

Writing in the Irish Independent, Katy Hayes described the musical as a “triumph” and a “brilliantly accomplished” work.[7]

In the Irish Examiner, the production was described as “ambitious in scope,” with commentary highlighting its storytelling and performances.[5]
