TerraPay is a financial technology company that operates cross-border payment infrastructure connecting mobile wallets, bank accounts, and cards in over 150 receiving countries.[1] Founded in 2014 and headquartered in London, the company provides a payments network used by financial institutions and money transfer operators for international remittances, business payouts, and payment acceptance.[2] TerraPay's legal entity is registered in the Netherlands as Terra Payment Services (Netherlands) B.V.[3] In 2023, Visa made a strategic equity investment in the company, and in 2025, Mastercard entered into a partnership with TerraPay to extend digital wallet acceptance globally.[4][5]
History
Founding and early years (2014–2019)
TerraPay was founded in 2014 by Ambar Sur, Ram Sundaram, Aniruddha Sane, and Akbar Hussain.[6][7] The founders had prior experience in the telecommunications and mobile payments industry; Sur had previously co-founded CellCloud Technologies in 2000 and spent over 13 years at Comviva Technologies, a Mahindra Group subsidiary, where he served as Wholetime Director and Senior Vice President.[2] The founding concept for TerraPay drew on the interoperability model of the telecommunications industry, applying it to cross-border payments with a focus on mobile wallets and small-value transactions.[2]
The company was formally incorporated in 2015 and commenced live operations in 2017 after obtaining its initial set of regulatory licences in the United Kingdom.[2] In its early years, TerraPay focused on building direct connections to mobile money operators in Africa and South Asia, targeting remittance corridors where traditional correspondent banking infrastructure was limited or absent.[1]
In 2019, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, led TerraPay's Series A funding round with an investment of approximately US$9.6 million.[3] The round also included participation from Prime Ventures and Partech Africa.[8]
Expansion and Series B (2020–2023)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, TerraPay grew from approximately 36 employees to over 200, as demand for digital cross-border payment channels increased.[2]
In April 2023, TerraPay closed its Series B equity financing round, raising in excess of US$100 million in combined equity and debt financing.[1][9] The round was led by IFC and supported by Prime Ventures, Partech Africa, and the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).[8] The company stated it would use the proceeds to expand its payout network to 150 countries, with a particular focus on Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa region.[1]
In May 2023, Visa made a strategic equity investment in TerraPay and entered into a partnership to connect Visa Direct, its real-time push payments platform, to the TerraPay network.[4][10] The collaboration was intended to extend Visa Direct's reach to TerraPay's network of mobile wallet providers and bank accounts across 108 receiving countries at the time.[4]
In the same year, CB Insights included TerraPay on its annual Fintech 100 list of private financial technology companies.[11]
US licensing and debt financing (2022–2024)
In July 2024, TerraPay secured US$95 million in debt financing from a consortium of development finance institutions including IFC, British International Investment (BII), Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (BIO), and OP Finnfund Global Impact Fund I.[12][13] The funds were designated for use as working capital to pre-fund remittance volumes to African corridors, where the average cost of sending US$200 remained approximately 8 per cent in 2022, more than double the Sustainable Development Goal target of 3 per cent.[12]
Separately, TerraPay obtained money transmission licences in the United States beginning in 2022, enabling the company to operate in the country's remittance send market.[14]
Wallet Interoperability Council (2024)
In August 2024, TerraPay formed a Wallet Interoperability Council with five leading digital wallet operators — Airtel, bKash, MPESA, Nequi, and Sama Money — to facilitate cross-border payments between their respective domestic platforms.[15][16] The council was designed to enable participating wallets to interconnect for multiple transaction types, including remittances and merchant payments, with TerraPay providing the underlying technology infrastructure, clearing, and settlement processes.[17]
Xend and Mastercard partnership (2025)
On 24 November 2025, TerraPay launched Xend, a payments interoperability network connecting mobile wallets to the banking system and card acceptance infrastructure.[18][19] The company stated that the platform would allow wallet users to receive funds via SWIFT and to make payments at card acceptance locations.[20] At launch, TerraPay reported that the network was live with more than 200 million wallet users through existing partners.[21]
In December 2025, Mastercard announced a collaboration with TerraPay to extend digital payment capabilities to TerraPay's wallet partners using near-field communication (NFC) technology at more than 150 million Mastercard acceptance locations.[5][22][23] American Banker reported that the partnership was part of a broader push by both Visa and Mastercard to build global distribution for mobile wallets ahead of regulatory changes expected to open NFC access on smartphones.[5]
Products and services
TerraPay operates a cross-border payments infrastructure that financial institutions and payment service providers access through a single API connection.[24] Its services include cross-border payment processing (supporting payouts to mobile wallets, bank accounts, and cards), business disbursements for payroll and merchant settlements, and payment acceptance through card network partnerships.[22]
In 2025, the company launched Xend, a payments interoperability network intended to connect mobile wallets to the banking system via SWIFT and to card acceptance networks.[18]
Network and regulation
According to the company, TerraPay's network provides access to over 3.7 billion mobile wallets, 7.5 billion bank accounts, and 12 billion cards across more than 150 receiving countries, supporting payments in over 80 currencies.[18] These figures represent the aggregate addressable endpoints across TerraPay's partner networks rather than individual direct connections.
TerraPay's integration partners include mobile money operators such as M-Pesa, MTN Mobile Money, and Airtel Mobile Money, as well as money transfer operators including Western Union and Wise.[12][15]
Funding
TerraPay has raised a total of approximately US$260 million across equity and debt financing rounds.[9][12][10]
| Date | Round | Amount (US$) | Lead investors |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | Series A | ~9.6 million | IFC |
| April 2023 | Series B | 100+ million (equity and debt) | IFC |
| May 2023 | Strategic investment | Undisclosed | Visa |
| July 2024 | Debt financing | 95 million | IFC, BII, BIO, Finnfund |
