Susan Helen Petrie, credited as Susan Petrie or Sue Helen Petrie, (1951-2015) was a Canadian actor active in the 1970s.
The "elfin" Petrie appeared in numerous films, television shows, and theatrical productions across Canada, including the comedies Rip-Off (1971) and A Sweeter Song (1976), as well as David Cronenberg's body horror film Shivers (1975). In the latter film, Petrie was unable to cry on camera, so she told Cronenberg to slap her face, leading an unknowing Barbara Steele to curse and get physical with the director.[1]
Critic Stephen Chesley praised Petrie's performance in A Sweeter Song, calling her "one of the best actresses in Canadian film" based on the part: "Unlike her past typecasting as the frigid teenage tease, she finds things in this character that aren't in the script."[2]
Petrie moved to Hollywood with her then boyfriend, Canadian director Allan Eastman, to advance her career, but ultimately gave up acting. Her last professional role was in 1977.[3]
Petrie was married to Myles Reiss for 37 years, from 1981 until her death on April 16, 2015, at the age of 63.
