Susan Jane Lousada (born October 1960) is a British businesswoman and philanthropist. She was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire in 2017 and served as High Sheriff of Bedfordshire during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020. Susan was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire on 7 September 2022[1].
Early Life, Education, and Career
Born in Bedfordshire, Susan attended Leeds University where she gained a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and Microbiology. She further achieved a PGCE in Translational Medicine from Cranfield University. Married to Simon for over 40 years, they have two children and two grandchildren.
Having begun her career in infertility research, Susan and Simon set up a Specialist Matting and Washroom Services Company in 1985, growing the business for several years until its sale in 2007. She has many years’ experience of running a business and continues to serve as a Director of a Property and Investment Company. She has previously Chaired a Research Ethics Committee in Oxford and sat as a Non-Legal Member in the First Tier Tax Tribunal.[2]
Charitable Work
Susan has been actively involved locally with a particular focus on the education of children and young people. She has previously been a School Governor, Chairman of Bedfordshire NSPCC, a member of the Senior Management Team of Schoolreaders Charity and served on the Bedfordshire Committee of the East Anglian Air Ambulance. She has also been a Trustee of the Moggerhanger House Preservation Trust, President of the Friends of Bedford Hospital and a Friend of the Higgins (Art Gallery) Bedford. Appointed a Commander of the Order of St John[3], Susan continues to serve as a member of the County Priory Group (St John Ambulance).
Shrievalty
Susan served as High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in 2020/2021[4] and, during the Covid lockdowns, spearheaded the provision of over 1,800 digital devices to under-privileged children in the county to help them continue their education online[5][6].
Lieutenancy
Susan was appointed His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire in September 2022[7][8], having previously served as a Deputy Lieutenant for five years[9]. She has arranged various Royal visits across Bedfordshire[10][11][12][13][14], presented Honours to residents[15][16], King's Awards for Enterprise[17] to local businesses, and King's Award for Voluntary Service to local volunteer groups[18]. As Lord-Lieutenant, she is also Keeper of the Rolls and Chair the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee for the appointment of Magistrates in the county[19]. Susan has committed her tenure to promoting social cohesion, fostering mutual respect and understanding, and championing the many individuals, businesses, voluntary organisations and community groups that contribute to Bedfordshire[20].
