Draft:Suqaar

Beef suqaar (shown on the bottom right)

Suqaar is a traditional Somali stew made with various meats like Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Camel and etc.

Etymology

[1] The word suqaar literally means "diced pieces" or "small pieces". The reasoning for that is because the preparation method for making suqaar is dicing the meat into cubes. There are various spellings for this word, suqaar, sukhaar, suqar, sukhar, suqqar, and etc.

History

The dish was inspired by pre-colonial origins, where nomadic cooking methods for meat dishes were popular. The dish was also influenced by Indian Ocean Trades in Somaliland, where spices like Tumeric, Cumin, Fenugreek and Coriander were brought there. Then during Italian annexation, onions, peppers and tomatoes were brought to the land. And urban cooking was popularized.
