Suchana Chavanich (also known as Apple Chavanich) is a Thai marine scientist and professor in the Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. Her research focuses on marine ecosystems and coral reef conservation. She is known for being the first Thai female scientist to participate in Antarctic research expeditions.[1]. She is also part of the Thai research team that reported Thailand’s first successful sexual propagation of corals [2].
Early Life and Education
Chavanich completed her secondary education at Chulalongkorn University Demonstration School in Bangkok. She received a bachelor's degree in Marine Science from the Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University. She later pursued graduate studies in the United States, obtaining a Master’s degree from Central Connecticut State University and a Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire [3].
In 2021, she was appointed professor in oceanography at Chulalongkorn University [3].
Antarctic Research
In 2009, Chavanich participated in the 51st Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-51). The expedition conducted research on environmental change and its effects on Antarctic ecosystems.
