History

Studio Nicholson was founded in 2010 by Nick Wakeman.[1] The brand was initially established as a womenswear business, with early collections based on wardrobe staples such as shirts, jeans and tailored jackets.[2]

In 2017, Studio Nicholson expanded into menswear, which later accounted for approximately half of the company’s sales.[2]

Design and style

Studio Nicholson has been described as a minimalist label focused on fabric, fit and wardrobe staples rather than trend-led fashion.[1]

Writing in the Financial Times, Simon Chilvers described the brand’s clothing as emphasising fabric, colour and fit, and noted the influence of architecture on Nick Wakeman’s design approach.[2]

In The Guardian, Wakeman stated that the brand’s tailored garments are influenced by Japanese fashion and are designed without shoulder padding or canvassing.[3]

In Le Monde, the brand’s collections were described as featuring natural colour palettes, draped fabrics and garments influenced by Japanese minimalism, including tailored knitwear, coats and denim.[4]

In an interview with GQ, Wakeman said the brand aims to produce clothing designed for long-term wear, reflecting an emphasis on durability and use over time.[5]

Wallpaper* reported that Wakeman’s design approach is informed by the relationship between form and function, with fabric playing a central role in the brand’s development process.[6] The publication also noted Wakeman’s interest in architecture and materials as part of her wider creative references.[6]

The Evening Standard described Studio Nicholson’s clothing as minimalist and compared the brand’s positioning to The Row, while noting its use of neutral palettes and considered fabrication.[7]

Retail and distribution

According to Vogue Business, Studio Nicholson is stocked in more than 250 stores internationally and operates mono-brand retail locations in London and Tokyo.[1] The same source reported that the company has expanded its presence across Asia, including Japan, China and South Korea.[1]

The Evening Standard reported that Studio Nicholson opened a Soho flagship in 2021, expanded to Tokyo in 2023, and later opened a Redchurch Street store in east London.[7]
