StudentQR

StudentQR is a Malaysian education technology system designed to manage student attendance and behaviour through QR code–based identification. The platform enables teachers to record attendance, document behavioural merit and demerit points, and generate reports for school administration and parental review.[1]

The system has been implemented in Malaysian schools and has attracted international interest, particularly from institutions exploring digital approaches to behavioural documentation and administrative efficiency.[2]

Background and Development

StudentQR was developed to address administrative workload and behavioural documentation challenges faced by teachers in schools.

The idea for StudentQR emerged in 2014 when its founder, Syed Huzaifah Syed Omar, was working as an IT consultant training teachers under Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources. During this period, exposure to daily school operations highlighted limitations in manual attendance recording and fragmented approaches to tracking student behaviour.

The first prototype of StudentQR was piloted at a school in Bangi with the support of teachers and students. The pilot indicated that QR-based monitoring could reduce manual record-keeping and improve the consistency of behavioural documentation. Following this initial trial, the system was further developed into an integrated platform for attendance tracking, behavioural record management, and report generation accessible to schools and parents.

System Design and Features

StudentQR operates using QR codes embedded in student identification badges, allowing teachers to scan and record attendance and behaviour without manual paperwork.

Key features of the system include:

  • QR-based student attendance tracking
  • Behavioural merit and demerit documentation
  • Report generation for schools and parents
  • Offline scanning capability for use in low-connectivity environments
  • Multilingual system support

The platform supports offline functionality, enabling data to be recorded without an internet connection and synchronised once connectivity is available. This design supports use in schools located in areas with limited digital infrastructure.

Identification System and Funding Support

As part of its implementation, StudentQR introduced a fabric-based QR student badge that integrates a student’s name, school logo, and QR code into a durable and washable patch. The badge serves as a core component of the system’s identification and scanning process and is designed for regular use on school uniforms.

The development and early deployment of StudentQR received support from Malaysia-based innovation programmes, including Cradle Sprint 500 and SUPERB TERAJU grants.

Adoption and Reception

In Malaysia, StudentQR has been reported to assist schools in streamlining attendance recording and reducing manual administrative processes for teachers.

In January 2024, media coverage by Astro Awani and Harian Metro reported interest from schools in Japan, citing alignment with moral education practices.[3]

StudentQR has since been implemented in Malaysia and explored or piloted in several other countries, including Indonesia, Australia, and the United States.

Reported usage of the system in Malaysia has exceeded one million student records.

Coverage by The Edge Malaysia highlighted the platform’s role in supporting school-level monitoring and administrative efficiency.

Founder

StudentQR was founded by Syed Huzaifah Syed Omar, a Malaysian technology entrepreneur and educator involved in education-focused digital innovation.
