OccupationsAuthor, retired detective

Steve Hodel (born November 6, 1941) is an American author, retired Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective, and licensed private investigator.[1][2][3] He is known for his investigations into the 1947 Black Dahlia murder, alleging his father, Dr. George Hodel, committed the crime.[4][5][6]

Early life and career

Hodel was born in Los Angeles, the son of medical doctor George Hodel.[7][8] He served as a United States Navy medic before joining the LAPD in 1963.[1][9][10] Hodel became senior homicide detective at Hollywood Division in 1983, receiving over 75 commendations and handling more than 300 murder investigations.[1][3][11] He retired in 1986 and established Hodel Investigations.[2][12][13]

Black Dahlia investigation

Following his father's death in 1999, Hodel discovered photographs he believed depicted Elizabeth Short.[8][11] District Attorney files revealed George Hodel was a suspect, with surveillance transcripts capturing him stating: "Supposing I did kill the Black Dahlia, they can’t prove it now."[4][7][14][15] Media coverage in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Guardian, and BBC News discussed both the evidentiary claims and the controversy around his conclusions.[7][10][8][5][16]

In Black Dahlia Avenger (2003), updated in 2025, published by Arcade Publishing, Hodel proposed the crime scene reflected Man Ray's surrealist imagery.[17][18][10][19]

Publications

Hodel's works include Black Dahlia Avenger (2003), a New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award nominee, Most Evil (2009), and subsequent volumes expanding his theories on his father's alleged serial crimes.[20][17][21] His investigations have been discussed in television programmes such as NBC Dateline and CBS 48 Hours, and in tabloid and magazine coverage linking his theories to other unsolved crimes.[22][4][23]

The 2019 podcast Root of Evil: The True Story of the Hodel Family explored his family's history and theories and served as a companion to the television series I Am the Night.[24][25][5]
