Development
As early as 2021, a proposed American, English-language version of the Korean-language thriller series Squid Game (2021-2025) was in development at Netflix.[2] In April 2023, David Fincher agreed to direct the adaptation.[3] By June 2024, Dennis Kelly was hired as writer.[2] In October 2024, it was officially confirmed by Deadline Hollywood that the series would be going forward with Fincher.[4] The series was teased following the series finale of the Korean version, with Cate Blanchett appearing as a recuiter on the Los Angeles portion of the game.[5]
Media outlets noted the cameo appearance of Blanchett in the season finale of the third season, interpreted by fans and journalists as a potential setup for the U.S. remake. GQ highlighted this scene and speculated on its implications for a spin-off directed by Fincher.[6] CBR also reported on Blanchett’s role, describing her character as a "new recruit" and reinforcing rumors of a new series led by Fincher.[7] The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Hwang Dong-hyuk, the showrunner of the original Squid Game series, was aware of the speculation and acknowledged that "multiple projects have been discussed" involving international expansions of the franchise, but declined to provide specific plot details about the American version.[8] Additionally, Variety referred to the project as Squid Game: America, citing unnamed sources connected to Netflix.[9]
The series was officially greenlight in November 2025 with Fincher as director and produced by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Fincher, Kim Ji-yeon, Zeus Zamani and Rhett Giles.[1]
Casting
In August 2025, Pom Klementieff was eyed to star in the series.[10] In November 2025, Blanchett's appearance as the Recruiter of the games in the United States was confirmed, reprising her role from the third season of Squid Game.[1]
Filming
Principal photography was scheduled to begin on February 26, 2026 in Los Angeles.[1]
Reception
Speculation about an English-language adaptation has generated mixed reactions. Some critics have questioned whether the themes of economic inequality and societal collapse, central to the original show, would translate meaningfully into a U.S. context. Others have expressed optimism, given Fincher’s track record with psychologically intense dramas such as Mindhunter and Gone Girl.
