Spiros Gelekas (born 1979) is a Greek visual artist known for his fantasy art and illustrations inspired by the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. His work has been included in official Tolkien-related publications such as the Tolkien Calendar 2023, Beyond Bree 2025 Calendar, and Mallorn, the journal of The Tolkien Society.[1]
Early life and education
Gelekas was born in Corfu, Greece, in 1979, where he continues to live and work. He began studying painting in 1987 under Corfiot painter Spyros Alamanos. From 2002 to 2015 he worked as a decorator, designing commercial and private interiors across Greece. In 2016 he devoted himself exclusively to painting.
His artistic influences include fantasy art, surrealism, modern art, and particularly Salvador Dalí and Roger Dean.
Artistic career
Gelekas specializes in fantasy art with a strong focus on Tolkien’s Middle-earth. His work incorporates surrealist and symbolic elements, dramatic lighting, and intricate landscapes.
He has held solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, including at the Corfu Municipal Theatre and the Corfu Art Gallery. His artworks have been exhibited in China in surrealist exhibitions alongside works by Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso.[2] He has also exhibited at the Quanzhou Museum in China and the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro, as well as in exhibitions in Athens and Thessaloniki focused on Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
His solo exhibition Tales from Middle-Earth was hosted at Govedarou Fine Art Gallery in Thessaloniki.[3]
In 2023 he participated in Oxonmoot, the annual gathering of The Tolkien Society held in Oxford.[4] His exhibitions and artistic activity have also been covered in Greek media.[5]
His works are held in private collections and museums in the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, Russia, and China.
Recognition and publications
Gelekas has contributed artwork to several Tolkien-related publications:
- Tolkien Calendar 2023 – featuring his Middle-earth illustrations alongside Jenny Dolfen, Justin Gerard, and Donato Giancola.[6]
- Beyond Bree 2025 Calendar – his artwork The Entmoot was selected for the cover.
- Mallorn (The Tolkien Society Journal) – his artwork Sacred Path of Mirkwood appeared on the cover; The Cacophony of Morgoth was featured inside.
He also illustrated the cover of the book Επιδράσεις της Αρχαίας Ελληνικής Γραμματείας στο έργο του Τζ. Ρ. Ρ. Τόλκιν (Kedros Publications, 2021).
International distinctions
Gelekas has received distinctions in international competitions, including:
- Finalist at the Pébéo Mixed Media Art Prize (2019)
- Nominee among the top 100 artists at the Global Art Awards (2018)
- Featured in Global Art Freaks Magazine (2018)
- Top 10 in the Faber-Castell Neon Skylines Competition (2014)
- 1st place in a fantasy art competition (2016)
- 2nd place in a steampunk-themed art competition (2017)
- Honorary distinction from Fresno County Public Library
- Commendation from the Municipality of South Corfu (2022)
Style and themes
Gelekas’ art blends surreal and fantastical elements, using dreamlike landscapes, symbolic imagery, and atmospheric contrasts. His work often depicts narrative scenes from Tolkien’s legendarium.
