Snorkel AI is an American company that offers services for creating and curating data used in building and training AI.[2][3][4]

History

Snorkel AI was founded in 2019 by Alex Ratner, Paroma Varma, Braden Hancock, and Henry Ehrenberg.[5][6]

The company spun out of a Stanford AI Lab project on generating data for AI systems guided by Christopher Ré.[5][2]. There, Ratner and Varma authored the 2017 paper Snorkel: Rapid Training Data Creation with Weak Supervision, which has been cited over 1,000 times in academic literature. [7] Subsequent publications like Snuba: Automating Weak Supervision to Label Training Data and Training Complex Models with Multi-Task Weak Supervision, expanded on these methods.[8][9]

The company has had several rounds of financing.[10][11][2][12] Most recently, the company raised a $100 million Series D, valuing the company at $1.3 billion.[13]

In 2025, Bloomberg reported that Snorkel AI and several other companies including Surge AI and Mercor were seeing increased demand in the wake of the Meta Platforms investment in rival Scale AI.[14][15]

Products

Snorkel AI historically sold data tools for training AI.[3][16]

In 2025, it was reported that the company was pivoting to selling datasets and evaluations as a service, laying off 13% of its workforce as a result of the change in product strategy.[17][18]
