Snapper Services is a New Zealand-based technology company that develops public transport ticketing systems and transit data analytics platforms. Its products are used by public transport operators and authorities both in New Zealand and internationally.

History

Snapper Services was founded in 2006 by New Zealand infrastructure investment company Infratil. In 2008, the company launched the Snapper Card in Wellington, enabling contactless payments for public transport and small-value retail transactions.[1]

Following acquisition by ICM Mobility Group in 2019, Snapper Services expanded its international operations, including establishing headquarters in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and employing more than 80 staff across engineering, product, and customer-facing roles.[2][3][4]

In 2023, the company launched the Mosaiq Transit Intelligence Suite, a cloud based analytics platform designed to provide transport operators and authorities with data insights into network performance and operations, with the ultimate goal of creating more reliable public transport networks.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

In 2026, Snapper Services launched its newest venture, the Mosaiq Global Public Transit Index (GPTI). The first edition launched at Interchange in Manchester in March of 2026. The GPTI is a free-to-access web-based interactive benchmarking tool that enables users to compare on-time performance (OTP) metrics across locations worldwide, intending to help users understand how their networks compare and identify potential peers for further analysis.

Products and services

Snapper ticketing

The Snapper card is a contactless electronic ticketing card used to pay for bus and train fares in Wellington, New Zealand.[1] The platform functions as a stored-value transport card, similar to London’s Oyster card, allowing users to load credit for fares and access account-based features such as mobile top-ups and customer self-service.[11][12]

The system was among the early implementations of small-value, contactless smart‑card ticketing for public transport in New Zealand, first introduced in Wellington in 2008.[13][14]

Another version of the Snapper card – the Snapper HOP card – was introduced to Auckland in 2011 and withdrawn from Auckland in late 2013.[15] Snapper CityLink cards were introduced in Whangārei in March 2014 and withdrawn in September 2018.[16]

Mosaiq Transit Intelligence Suite

The Mosaiq Transit Intelligence Suite is a cloud-based analytics platform developed by Snapper Services.[17][18][19] Launched in 2023, it is designed to provide transport operators and authorities with data insights into network performance and operations, with the ultimate goal of creating more reliable public transport networks.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

The platform gives users a more comprehensive view of operations and enables them to identify network inefficiencies by integrating various data sources to support analysis of service reliability operational efficiency and passenger experience.[17]

The Mosaiq Transit Intelligence Suite includes:

  • Mosaiq Insights, which offers network performance analytics
  • Mosaiq Go, a smartphone application for gathering data[20]
  • Mosaiq Live, which shows vehicle movements in real time

The Mosaiq Transit Intelligence Suite can also work alongside public transport benchmarking tools, such as the Mosaiq Global Public Transit Index (GPTI).

Mosaiq Global Public Transit Index (GPTI)

The Mosaiq Global Public Transit Index is a free-to-access web-based interactive benchmarking tool that enables users to compare on-time performance (OTP) metrics across locations worldwide, using open data from the most recent 28-day period. It is intended to help users understand how their networks compare and identify potential peers for further analysis.

Developed in response to limitations in traditional benchmarking approaches and the fragmented nature of existing comparisons, the interactive platform replaces static reports with a regularly updated view of performance.

The GPTI allows users to compare network performance across locations, and data from the GPTI can provide additional context for analysis within Mosaiq Insights, providing users with a more comprehensive view of their network.[21][22][23][24]
