Silver Halide is a standalone desktop application for macOS and Microsoft Windows that simulates the photochemical development of digital photographs. Unlike conventional film-emulation tools that apply look-up tables (LUTs) or static presets, Silver Halide uses a physics engine to model the physical and chemical processes that occur when light interacts with analog film.

Background

Film photography produces images through a series of physical processes: photons striking silver halide crystals in a light-sensitive emulsion, chemical developers reducing exposed crystals to metallic silver, and subtractive dye layers forming the final color image. Conventional digital film filters approximate this look through color grading, but do not model the underlying physics.

Technology

The application's core engine uses emulsion physics, subtractive color science and chemical halation. Users can edit modules to alter the visual appearance.
