Seyebomi Ademuyiwa Adeniran Ogunsanya, professionally known as Sheye Banks is a Nigerian on-air personality based in Lagos, Nigeria.[1] He is widely regarded as the pioneer of Afro-Hype, a subgenre of Afrobeats, where a hypeman performs over danceable instrumental beats without a conventional vocalist.[2]

Early life and background

Banks grew up in Egbeda in Akowonjo, Lagos State, Nigeria.[3] In 2010, during a gap year in Kent, UK, Banks was introduced to Ashford Hospital Broadcasting Service (AHBS), which influenced his decision to pursue a career in broadcasting.[4] He returned to Nigeria and began studying at University of Lagos (UNILAG).[1] he has cited Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Westlife, and Michael Jackson as his musical influence.[3]

Career

Banks joined UNILAG FM, a campus radio station of UNILAG, where he served as on-air personality.[4] In 2015, he worked at Kiss FM in Abuja and later in the Lagos station which was launched in 2016.[4] In March 2019 he left Kiss FM for Soundcity 98.5 FM. In the same year he won the City People Entertainment Awards for best on-air personality of the year.[1]
