Shelly Rastin (born October 01, 1969) is a Canadian country singer-songwriter and performer. She is known for her work as an independent recording artist, live performer, and songwriter within the Canadian country music industry. Rastin has released multiple albums and singles, earned recognition on Canadian country radio charts, and performed alongside several notable country music artists.

Early life

Shelly Rastin was born in Ontario, Canada. She was raised in Strathroy-Caradoc, Ontario, Canada, where she developed an interest in country music and live performance at an early age. Influenced by traditional country music and contemporary country-rock artists, she began performing locally before pursuing a professional music career.

Career

Rastin established herself in the Ontario country music scene through regional performances, festival appearances, and independent music releases. She gained attention for her energetic live shows and contemporary country-rock sound, eventually building a presence on Canadian country radio.

Her early releases included the albums Am I Dreaming (2000) and Shelly in the Making (2004), followed by her best-known album Hard to Say No in 2009.[1]

Rastin's singles, including "Born in a Barn", "Be True to You", "Country Mile", "Confused", "Taken", "High Class Trailer Trash", and "Mexico State of Mind", received Canadian country radio airplay and chart recognition.[2]

Early in her career, Rastin performed as an opening or supporting act for major country music artists including: Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Jason Blaine, and Doc Walker.[3] [4] [5]

Rastin participated in the production of the VH1 documentary Adventures in Rock, a documentary project associated with Canadian music producer Jack Richardson. In 2001, Rastin stated that she and her band had been invited to take part in filming sessions connected to the documentary, including live recording sessions at EMAC Studios in London, Ontario.[6]

On March 15, 2001, Rastin was scheduled to appear on Open Mike with Mike Bullard, though the appearance was later postponed after American rock and roll singer Ronnie Hawkins arrived last minute and was booked on the program that night, ultimately bumping Rastin from appearing on the show.[7]

On November 30, 2001, Rastin served as the opening act for Canadian country singer Michelle Wright at Hiawatha Raceway and Slots in Sarnia, Ontario. On December 15, of the same year she performed as the opening act for Nashville Heavy Headliner Andy Griggs.[8]

By June 2006, Rastin had received regional Country Artist and Singer/Songwriter of the Year honours for three consecutive years.[9]

Rastin was a nominee for an Independent Music Award during the 2008 Canadian Music Week Indie Awards.[10]

In July 2009, Rastin performed with her band in front of 20,000 people at Rogers Sarnia Bayfest in Sarnia, Ontario, where she opened for Keith Urban.

Rastin has collaborated with a number of Canadian and American songwriters and musicians, including: Randy Bachman, Jason Barry, Byron Hill, Darcy Corbett, and Steve Fox.[11] [12]

Rastin made her mark in country music radio when her single "Born in a Barn" earned her a spot at #98 in the top 100 billboard country music charts.[13] [14]

Her hit single "High Class Trailer Trash" featuring Canadian rock musician Randy Bauchman of The Guess Who and Bachman–Turner Overdrive, was been picked up by MTV’s Rock Band online gaming community. The song was included as part of the games Rock Band Network 1.0 songs and was downloadable with Xbox 360 upon its October 4, 2010 release.[15]

Her work has earned multiple nominations and awards connected to the Jack Richardson Music Awards/Forest City London Music Awards, where she received recognition in country artist and songwriting categories.[16]

Rastin won the Contemporary Singer/Songwriter category at the Jack Richardson Music Awards in 2005 and 2006.[17]

In 2013, Rastin was nominated in the Country and Bluegrass Artist or Group category at the Jack Richardson Music Awards.[18]

Rastin and her band were included among nominees for the 2020 Forest City London Music Awards.[19]

Rastin worked with PA Shop Productions, a London, Ontario-based live sound and production company, during the 2022 summer concert season.[20]

In addition to recording and songwriting, Rastin has remained active as a live performer throughout Ontario, appearing at music venues, festivals, and concert events including performances on the St. Clair River entertainment circuit and regional country music festivals.[21] Most notably, RAWK the Boat, where every August, Rastin and her band perform on the Duc d'Orléans II River Cruise along the St. Clair river in Sarnia, Ontario. A 3 hour scenic tour of entertainment. Tickets for the trip sell out, often filling the boat, with not only fans, but also close friends and family members of Rastin and her band.[22]

Musical style

Rastin's music combines elements of contemporary country, country rock, and adult contemporary music. Her performances have been noted for blending traditional country influences with modern production and radio-oriented songwriting.

Charitable Work

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Rastin participated in a London, Ontario music community tribute, where the Forest City London Music Awards pulled together 31 musicians and vocalists, under the name of Musicians United, to record — each in isolation from their homes — the Blue Rodeo hit, Lost Together. The compilation video was created to pay tribute to front-line health-care workers and others battling the coronavirus pandemic.[23]
