Shaleeni Ranchhod is a South African actress who is known for her roles in television and international films. In 2014 she made her acting debut in the American series Orange Is the New Black. Since 2014 Ranchhod has featured in notable films and shows including; Homeland (2015), Sanam Teri Kasam (2016), and Black Mirror (2016). In 2019 she featured as Nisreen in the British espionage series Deep State.[1][2][3]

Early life
Ranchhod was born in Grahamstown, South Africa.[4] Her father is Piryawaden "Pierre" Ranchhod, a prominent South African ANC state politician, councillor and multi-million property businessman who worked with Nelson Mandela.[5][6][7]
At aged 10, Ranchhod attended independent The Kingswood College. She was then educated at the Diocesan School for Girls, a private boarding school in Grahamstown.[8]
She later attended Trinity College London, where she completed her advanced performance diploma.[9]New York Film Academy, and the Columbia University in the City of New York.[10][11]
Career
Ranchhod's first significant acting role was in the American comedy-drama television series, Orange is the New Black. She worked with director Darrell Roodt.[12] Since 2014 she has played roles in notable films and television series, including Grey's Anatomy, Homeland, Black Mirror, Deepstate, Sanam Teri Kasam and Noughts + Crosses. In 2024 Ranchhod played Herma Varma in Greytown Girl, a film which later received a nomination at the Cannes Film Festival for best independent feature film.[13][14][15][16] Ranchhod's latest role was in the 2025 film, G20.[17]
Ranchodd has made acting performances on broadway.[18][19][20][21] She has performed for Nelson Mandela, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe.[22][23]
