Sequentum is an American enterprise software company that develops platforms for data extraction, automation, and alternative data pipeline management. Sequentum is recognized for its foundational role in the alternative data ecosystem and its active participation in global internet governance, particularly concerning the ethical sourcing of public web data and the development of technical standards for AI crawlers.

History

Sequentum was founded in 2006 by software engineers Tony Jaensch and Soren Mondrup.[1] Initially focused on desktop-based web scraping utilities like "Visual Web Ripper," the company expanded its product line to include "Content Grabber" around 2015 to support enterprise development teams.[2]

Headquartered in New York City[3], the company subsequently established a subsidiary, Sequentum India Private Limited, in Gurugram, India, in 2018.[4]

In December 2017, Sequentum secured a seed funding round from WorldQuant Ventures.[5] Under the leadership of CEO Sarah McKenna, the company evolved from standalone desktop software to managed data services and enterprise cloud solutions, shifting focus toward data compliance and provenance.

Governance and Internet Standards

Sequentum is a founding Steering Committee member of the Alliance for Responsible Data Collection (ARDC). The organization develops voluntary technical guidelines to maintain public internet data accessibility while preventing malicious scraping.[6] Additionally, the company participates in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Architecture Board (IAB), including the 2024 IAB AI-CONTROL Workshop, which focused on establishing standardized "AI preference signals" to manage the behavior of generative AI web crawlers.[7] Within the financial sector, Sequentum serves as a Technical Advisor to the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) Financial Information Standards Division (FISD) Alternative Data Council.
