Draft:Scott London
Scott London is an American journalist, author, and photographer[1] known for his public radio reportage and interviews[2], his fine art photography - most notably, his decades-long documentation of Burning Man[3] - and his written work exploring art, culture, education, politics, and the media.[4]
Early Life
London was born in Washington, DC, and spent his childhood in Stockholm, Sweden. In his early twenties, he returned to the United States and eventually landed in Santa Barbara, California when he moved into a rustic beach house owned by one of the Beach Boys. Reflecting on his arrival in the early 1990s, London described Santa Barbara as a haven for artists, writers and free spirits. "It attracts people from near and far," he wrote, "including restless souls, like me, who thought they were just passing though, but never left."[5]
Career
Journalism
Scott London began his career in radio, working as a program host and news reporter at WYSO, a public radio station in Ohio.[6] After relocating to California, he launched Insight and Outlook, a weekly series of field interviews with influential writers and thinkers. His aim for the program, he said, was "to offer a trenchant look at the ideas and trends shaping our future."[7] Produced at KCBX in San Luis Obispo, CA, the program gained national distribution in 1995 and aired on National Public Radio stations across the United States into the 2000s.[8] London has also been featured on CBS, American Public Media, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.[9]
London's written work explores democracy,[10][11][12] leadership,[13] education,[14][15] philanthropy,[16][17] immigration,[18][19][20] and climate change.[21] He has contributed essays and chapters to numerous books, including The Writer's Presence,[22] A Voice in the Wilderness,[23] Saga: Best New Writings on Mythology,[24] Deliberative Pedagogy,[15] American Decades,[25] and Public Thought and Foreign Policy.[9]: 76–88 His reference book Nobel Lectures in Peace (2001-2005), co-edited with historian Irwin Abrams, was commissioned by the Nobel Foundation.[26] In 2010, he contributed to 100 Words: Two Hundred Visionaries Share Their Hope for the Future,[2] a collection of writings from men and women who have spent their lives working for positive change.[27]
Photography
When Scott London first attended Burning Man in 2004, he recalled being "struck by the sheer inadequacy of words" in describing the event and decided photography was a more powerful medium for documenting the experience"[28] “What I love about Burning Man,” he said, “is that it’s all about creativity, self-expression, and freedom of imagination.”[29]
London's photographs are renowned for capturing the spirit of Burning Man.[30] London has stated that Burning Man has changed the way he sees the world, and "it makes artists out of all of us."[31] that he found so "visually intoxicating."[32]
London's photos have appeared in Rolling Stone,[33][34] CNN,[35] Forbes,[36][37] SFGate,[38] BoingBoing,[39] The New York Times,[40] and Architectural Digest.[41]
Over 200 photographs by London appear in the book Burning Man: Art on Fire by author Jennifer Raiser.[42][43] The book spawned multiple editions, was the winner of two Gold Foreword INDIES awards in 2023,[44] and in 2020 inspired a full-length documentary film of the same name.[45] London photographed Byron Katie in Ojai, CA for the cover of her book A Thousand Names for Joy.[46] London's photographs appear in Fred Turner's book From Burning Man to Facebook: Art, Technology and Management in Silicon Valley.[47] In 2015 London worked with the Vessel Project, a Phoenix-based theater ensemble, on a project funded by the Mesa Arts Center, where he photographed costumed figures set against the badlands of the Painted Desert.[48] The project was performed at the Spark Festival[49], the Phoenix Art Museum and other Arizona venues.[50] Also in 2015, London participated with other artists in the traveling Moving Europe mobile gallery and parades.[51] In 2020, London's photographs appeared in the book Smoke & Mirrors – Cars, Photography and Dreams of the Open Road by Adam Hay-Nicholls.[52][31] In 2024 London photographed and reported on an annual art festival held at Bombay Beach, on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea.[53] In 2024 SVT, Sweden's national television broadcaster, reported on London's work of documenting medieval churches.[54] In 2025, London authored the introductory essay for photographer Bill Zeldis's book Santa Barbara: A Portrait.[5]
In 2019 London presented his work at the Stanford University ArtsWest Symposium held at the De Young Museum.[55][56] His photographs have been included in the Smithsonian Institution's No Spectators exhibition in the Renwick Gallery in 2018,[57][40] The Art of Burning Man exhibition at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens in Norfolk, VA in 2017,[58] the City of Dust: The Evolution of Burning Man exhibition at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno in 2017,[59] the Living exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark in 2011, and the Art in the Ephemeral Age show at the Institute of Art and Ideas in the United Kingdom in 2009.[60]
