Sarkasm is a Canadian death metal and thrash metal band from Granby, Quebec, formed in 1990. After releasing two demos during the early 1990s underground metal scene, the band disbanded in 1994 before reuniting decades later. Following their reunion, Sarkasm released the studio albums As Empires Decay (2023) and Carnival of Atrocities (2025) through the Spanish extreme metal label Xtreem Music.

The band has received coverage in international metal publications and has performed alongside acts including Gorguts, Crypta, Martyr, Sacrifice, and Vantablack Warship. Vocalist Bruno Bernier is also the lead singer of the Canadian technical thrash metal band Obliveon.

History

Sarkasm formed in Granby, Quebec in 1990 during a period of growth in the Canadian extreme metal scene. The band released two demos during the early 1990s: Incubated Mind (1991) and Inner Flame (1992). Like many underground metal recordings of the era, the demos circulated through tape-trading networks and helped establish the band within the regional extreme metal community.

The group disbanded in 1994 but later reunited and resumed recording activities.

In 2021 the band's early demos Incubated Mind and Inner Flame were compiled and reissued together by Awakening Records, and in 2022 Xtreem Music issued a vinyl re-release of the band's 1992 demo Inner Flame.

Sarkasm released its debut studio album As Empires Decay in 2023 through Xtreem Music, marking the band's first full-length release more than three decades after its formation.

In 2025 Sarkasm released its second album Carnival of Atrocities. The album was mastered by Swedish producer Dan Swanö and received reviews in several international metal publications.

Musical style

Sarkasm's music combines elements of thrash metal and death metal, characterized by technical guitar riffing, aggressive rhythms, and mid-tempo passages. Critics have noted the band's blend of classic thrash influences with the intensity of modern extreme metal.

Critical reception

Sarkasm's releases have received coverage in numerous international metal publications and webzines. Reviews of Carnival of Atrocities were generally positive, with critics praising the band’s riff-driven songwriting and production.

A reviewer for Metal Temple described the album as “well produced, well written, well executed”, suggesting that with As Empires Decay and Carnival of Atrocities the band appeared to be “on a solid trajectory”.[1]

MetalNoise wrote that the album “raises the hairs on the back of the neck” and becomes increasingly compelling after repeated listens.[2]

The Metal Crypt highlighted the band's riffing and songwriting, describing the music as “precise, heavy, crunchy and often mid-paced,” although the reviewer noted that some passages rely on repetition that may make certain sections predictable.[3]
