Sandro Heleno Da Veiga Lopes (born 23 May 1996, Praia, Cape Verde), known professionally as Sandro Lopes, is a Cape Verdean visual artist. His work combines abstraction and figuration, exploring themes of identity, memory, and emotion, with exhibitions in Cape Verde and internationally.[1][2][3]

Biography

Sandro Lopes was born in Nossa Senhora da Graça, Praia, Cape Verde.[1] He began painting as a teenager, influenced by classical and modern artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jackson Pollock, Vincent van Gogh, and Frida Kahlo.[1]

His professional career started in 2018 when he accepted an invitation from his brother, Carlos Lopes, to participate in a group exhibition.[1]

Career

In 2018, Lopes participated in the exhibition Kabu Verdi Contemporâneo at the Centro Cultural da Cidade Velha, invited by the Municipal Chamber of Ribeira Grande de Santiago.[1] In the same year, he joined projects such as *Xalabas na Achada Grande Frente* and *Palácio Fora de Portas*, exhibited at *Jovens Talentos*, and represented Cape Verde at the IX Biennial of Young CPLP Creators in Luanda.[1]

In November 2021, he held his first solo exhibition, Reflex d’ nha alma, at the Palácio da Cultura Ildo Lobo in Praia. The artist described the exhibition as the "culmination of all my techniques and experiences acquired over all these years".[1]

According to the Kapverde Journal, Lopes is considered "an emerging artist between tradition and modernity", recognized for his experimentation and his ability to connect with younger audiences.[2]

Style and influences

Lopes’ artistic style balances gestural abstraction with figurative elements, using vibrant color, texture, and movement. BOOH Magazine highlighted that each painting is treated by Lopes as "a part of himself", designed to go beyond decoration and provoke emotion and reflection.[3]

His work is influenced by European classical art and 20th-century modern movements, while being rooted in his personal and Cape Verdean cultural experiences.[1][3]
