Sandip Chatterjee is an Indian Classical instrumentalist known as a professional Santoor player of India.[1]

Biography

Sandip Chatterjee was born in the year 1973 and began his musical journey with the Santoor at the tender age of eight. He is the disciple of the renowned Santoor maestro Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya and vocal maestro Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, establishing himself as a distinguished and skilled Santoor player of his era. He has been recognised as the torchbearer of two Gharanas simultaneously – MAIHAR and PATIALA. Through his enchanting strokes on the strings, he allows his distinctive melody to resonate. His profound exploratory nature has enabled him to adopt a dynamic approach to his playing style with one hand, which is often referred to as the “ONE HANDED SANTOOR BAAZ.”

Career

Sandip has performed extensively at many music festivals and concerts around the globe. And, he has also collaborated with many famous overseas musicians across genres such as Jazz, Rock, Contemporary and Fusion. The musical talent and virtuosity exhibited by Sandip over the years have been evident in his albums, which number up to 21. His expertise has also been sought after by esteemed music directors such as Shalil Choudhury, Gulshan Kumar, Rabindra Jain, and Pt. V. Balsara, among others.

Works

  • Sandip has worked with the famous Australian Jazz guitarist Guy Strazz and together released an album "CALCUTTA EXPRESS" marketed in India by Underscore Records, has been nominated as a finalist in the Indo Acoustic Project’s “Best CD’s of 2006” award in the World Music category.
  • Sandip has collaborated with a Swedish saxophone player Elin larsson and together recorded in India
  • Sandip has also collaborated with an Italian saxophonist and Flutist Claudio Giglio and they recorded an album in Catania, Sicily
