Samuel J. Dunlap was a football player. He was the first black student-athlete at Western Michigan.

Biography

Dunlap was born July 8, 1895, in Chicago, Illinois. His family moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan, where he played for the Benton Harbor High School football team. He was recruited by the University of Michigan, however, after learning that he was black, the school backed out of the recruitment. He subsequently enrolled at Western Michigan, then Western State Normal School.[1]

Dunlap joined the Western State football team in the 1915 season as a punter and halfback. In his third game, he amassed 430 yards of offense, one passing touchdown, three rushing touchdowns, and one interception in a 79-0 win over Alma College.

After playing in the 1916 and 1917 seasons, Sam Dunlap enrolled in the army. He returned for the 1919 season for his fourth and final season. While at Western, he also played baseball and was a member of the track and field team. After graduation, he became the head coach at West Virginia State University. He later worked for Consolidated Edison in New York City and lived in Los Angeles.

He returned to Kalamazoo in 1951. He died there on March 23, 1961.

In 1973, Dunlap was among the first group inducted into the Western Michigan University Athletics Hall of Fame.[2]
