The Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española (SIELE; transl. International Spanish Language Assessment Service) is an electronic certification and evaluation service of Spanish proficiency intended for students and professionals around the world.

Its governing body is comprised of the Instituto Cervantes, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the University of Salamanca and the University of Buenos Aires.[1][2] The exam itself also pays special attention to the various dialectical differences in Spanish[3].

The SIELE relies on more than 50 associated universities worldwide that contribute to research regarding the teaching of the Spanish language, supporting the quality of content and contributing innovative educational materials[4]. The academic excellence of these institutions contributes to the reliability and academic prestige of the SIELE.

The SIELE Certification of Spanish is an online exam that is conducted at Authorized Exam Centers. There are more than 85 countries and more than 1000 centers[5] in which candidates can certify their Spanish proficiency. They can take the exam at the location and time of their choice, as there are not preset exam dates.

Results are received within three weeks of taking the exam.[6]

SIELE Tests

SIELE certifies Spanish proficiency level through four tests:

  • Comprensión auditiva (Listening Comprehension): this test has a total of 6 tasks with 38 questions. The candidate must listen to different types of recordings (conversations, conferences, etc.) with differing levels of complexity and answer questions about them. There are 55 minutes allotted to take this test and it is scored automatically, with a maximum possible score of 250 points.
  • Comprensión de lectura (Reading Comprehension): consists of 5 tasks with a total of 38 questions. The candidate must read various texts with differing levels of complexity and answer questions about them. There are 60 minutes allotted to take this test and it is scored automatically, with a maximum possible score of 250 points.
  • Expresión e interacción escritas (Written Expression and Interaction): this test consists of 2 tasks where the candidate must write two texts, in accordance with the instructions and guidelines given. There are 50 minutes allotted to take this test. There is a maximum possible score of 250 points. The exam content is saved and evaluated afterwards by official SIELE graders.
  • Expresión e interacción orales (Oral Expression and Interaction): the candidate must record their answers to different questions that they will hear, then they will record two oral presentations. There are 15 minutes allotted to take this test. The maximum possible score is 250 points. The exam content is saved and evaluated afterwards by official SIELE graders.

SIELE uses the levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) from the Council of Europe as reference.

SIELE Exam Categories

SIELE Global

The SIELE Global Exam consists of four tests that line up with the main four communicative skills needed for a language. It is conducted over 3 hours and there are over 1000 points available as each test has a 250-point maximum.

Upon taking one of the individual SIELE exams, a report that is valid for five years is received which includes the score obtained on the test(s) taken and its equivalent CEFR level.

  • S1: An internationally-accredited report of the candidate's written and listening proficiency level in Spanish.
  • S2: An internationally-accredited report of the candidate's reading and written proficiency level in Spanish.
  • S3: An internationally-accredited report of the candidate's listening and spoken proficiency level in Spanish.
  • S4:An internationally-accredited report of the candidate's spoken proficiency level in Spanish.
  • S5: An internationally-accredited report of the candidate's written and spoken proficiency level in Spanish.
