Rob DeMillo
Rob DeMillo is an American technology entrepreneur, executive, and space industry leader. He is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer.[1]at Sophia Space, a space technology company developing orbital computing infrastructure and space-based data centers. DeMillo has worked [2] across aerospace research, cloud computing, digital media, and venture investment, and has been involved in multiple[3] technology startups[4] that achieved acquisitions or public offerings.
Early Life and Education
DeMillo studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison[5], where his academic work focused on scientific and technical disciplines including computer science, physics, and astronomy. He began his career as a scientist working on aerospace and communications technologies. Early in his professional career, DeMillo conducted research at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory[6], contributing to projects related to imaging systems and advanced computing technologies.
Career
Beginning in the 1990s, DeMillo became active in Silicon Valley’s startup ecosystem. Over several decades, he helped build and lead companies spanning mobile technology, digital media, and cloud infrastructure. Following Discovery Communications’ acquisition of Revision3, DeMillo served[7] as Chief Technology Officer of Discovery Digital Networks. He later became the first Chief Technology Officer in the history of global architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill,[8] overseeing technology and digital strategy initiatives.
He also serves as a Venture Partner at SparkLabs Global Ventures[9], advising startups expanding internationally. Across his career, DeMillo has been associated[10] with nine startup ventures, seven of which achieved acquisition or IPO outcomes.
Sophia Space
DeMillo co-founded Sophia Space in 2023 and became its Chief Executive Officer[11] in 2025. The company develops modular orbital computing systems designed to process data directly in space rather than transmitting it back to Earth. Sophia Space’s technology centers on a modular architecture known as the “TILE” platform[12], intended to enable artificial intelligence processing, edge computing, and eventually large-scale orbital data centers assembled in low Earth orbit. The approach[13] seeks to reduce latency, bandwidth requirements, and energy consumption associated with terrestrial data centers, utilizing passive radiative cooling technologies.
Under DeMillo’s leadership, the company has pursued partnerships across commercial spaceflight, defense, and data infrastructure sectors, and raised[14] venture funding to demonstrate in-space computing systems and deploy early orbital compute modules. The company plans initial operational demonstrations [15] in the late 2020s.
DeMillo has described [16] orbital computing as part of a broader transition in which low Earth orbit evolves from a government-dominated environment into commercial infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence and data processing[17]
View and Contributions
DeMillo has been an advocate[18] for relocating portions of global computing infrastructure into space, arguing that increasing data generation, AI workloads, and energy constraints will drive demand for space-based processing systems. [19] His work focuses[20] on integrating cloud computing principles with aerospace engineering, emphasizing modular design, passive thermal management, and distributed edge computing in orbit.
Recognition
DeMillo has received industry recognition for contributions to digital media and technology innovation, including being named among EContent magazine’s “Top 15 Influencers in Digital Media."[21]
