Rigger (musical artist)

Rigger is the electronic music project of Otis W. Brown III (also known as Otis Brown and Otis the Rigger, formerly recording as Otep 147), an American electronic music artist, DJ, and producer active since the early 1990s. His work spans experimental tape-based composition, ambient, IDM, trip-hop, breakbeat, and house music, and is characterized by immersive soundscaping and continuous transitions between tracks.

Brown’s approach is influenced by artists such as The Future Sound of London and The Orb, particularly in the use of environment-based composition and long-form sonic continuity.

Early life and career

Brown began experimenting with audio recording and sound manipulation in the early 1990s, using tape-based techniques and early computer sequencing tools. While attending West Chester University, he hosted a radio program on WCUR titled “That Canadian Chick and That Loser Show” between 1993 and 1995. During this period, he released experimental material under the alias Otep 147, focusing on ambient, industrial, and noise-based electronic music.

He also began DJing in 1993, with his first live club performance at Pulsations nightclub.

Rigger (1997–1999)

In 1997, Brown relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he formed the initial lineup of Rigger as a live electronic band. The group included Rick Perry (drums, vocals, lyricist), Luke White, Ben Blue, and R. Cary Horner IV.

The band performed in the Nashville–Murfreesboro area at venues such as Lucy's Record Shop, Main Street Live, and The Boro Bar & Grill. Their performances combined live drums, guitars, sequencing, and improvisation.

The live lineup dissolved in the summer of 1998.

Neutral and transition to solo work

Following the dissolution of the band, Brown relocated to Wilmington, where he established a home studio in a converted walk-in closet. During this period, he began compiling recordings from live performances and studio sessions, all sourced from cassette tapes, into the first Rigger album, Neutral.

The album reflects a transitional phase, combining live improvisation with reconstruction and remixing techniques. It blends ambient, IDM, trip-hop, and breakbeat elements, and introduced a defining characteristic of Brown’s work: the use of soundscaping transitions to create continuous, evolving compositions.

Later work and DJ career

In 1999, Brown resumed production activity under the Rigger name, later relocating to Philadelphia in 2003. From 2008 to 2011, he contributed as a DJ to the radio program “Edge Club” on KDGE 102.1 FM, performing breakbeat and house sets.

Between 2013 and 2017, he worked in New York City at Premier Studios and contributed to remix projects associated with Tommy Boy Records, including work involving Jane Badler and La Toya Jackson.
