Red Monk, stage name of Pablo Latapí Silva, is a Mexican music producer, DJ, composer, and multi-instrumentalist residing in Tulum, Quintana Roo. He is recognized in the contemporary electronic music scene for developing an avant-garde live looping proposal, in which he fuses ancestral and folk textures and instruments with experimental electronic music bases, spanning genres such as organic house, folktronica, and ethno-downtempo.[1] Earlier in his career, he developed musical projects under the name Pablo Sauti.[2]
Early years and background
Pablo Latapí Silva was born in Mexico into a family closely linked to media and culture; he is the son of the renowned Mexican journalist and television anchor Pablo Latapí Ortega.[3] From a young age, he showed a strong inclination toward musical performance and sonic exploration, which led him to pursue technical and academic training that he would consolidate throughout his different artistic stages.
Artistic career
Pablo Sauti era and pop releases
At the beginning of his professional career, the artist became known in the industry under the pseudonym Pablo Sauti. During this period, he worked as a composer, producer, and musician, exploring genres oriented toward alternative pop, ballad, and instrumental music, publicly expressing his admiration for figures of Mexican composition such as Armando Manzanero.[4]
Under this identity, he established major collaborations within the national music scene. In December 2017, he officially participated as a guest artist in the release of the acoustic version of the single "Perdón" by the renowned Latin Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Alexander Acha, contributing musical arrangements and instrumental guitar performance.[5]
Subsequently, he expanded his catalog as a soloist alongside the record label and distributor Casete, releasing tracks such as "De madrugada" and "Cuando no eres mía".[6][7] During the 2020 social confinement period, the artist continued his studio production, presenting the conceptual single "Para cuándo nos volvamos a ver", a production that caught the attention of the national entertainment press.[3] This stage in the commercial pop circuit laid the groundwork for his experience in high-level studio production.
Transition to Red Monk and the Tulum scene
Following a process of evolution and sonic introspection, Latapí Silva relocated to the Riviera Maya, where he adopted the alias Red Monk, completely transforming his musical proposal toward avant-garde electronic music. His current identity is characterized as a sonic bridge between ancestral traditions and digital technology.
In his live performances and studio sessions, he stands out as a multi-instrumentalist by performing and organically integrating traditional woodwind instruments—such as the bansuri flute and the quenacho—as well as the trumpet, guitars, and synthesizer arrangements, while weaving in his own real-time processed vocals (a technique known as live looping).
Throughout this stage, he has released record material through renowned international labels specializing in the organic and ethnic scene, such as Cafe De Anatolia and Cacao Records, positioning productions on music analytics portals like Songstats.[8] Furthermore, in December 2023, his musical project gained international exposure by participating with an exclusive session on the global electronic curation platform FRSCKO World Radio (Episode 026), representing the Tulum music scene.[9]
