''Ramesh Chandra Gaur'' (born 1 July 1966) is an Indian academic, librarian, and cultural heritage professional known for his work in digital preservation, documentary heritage, and library and information science in India.[1]. He has held senior positions at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and the National School of Drama (NSD)[2].
Gaur has been associated with initiatives related to manuscript preservation, digital repositories, archival documentation, and UNESCO documentary heritage programmes[3].
Early life and education
Gaur completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Jamia Millia Islamia. He later pursued studies in computer applications and library and information science, and obtained a PhD in Library and Information Science from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Agra.
During 2003–2004, he received a Fulbright Fellowship and worked at Virginia Tech in the United States, specialising in multimedia digital libraries.
Career
Dr. Gaur served as University Librarian at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he was associated with projects related to digital access and library modernisation[4][5].
He later joined the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, where he served as Professor and Dean of the Kala Nidhi Division. At IGNCA, he worked on initiatives involving manuscript digitisation, archival preservation, cultural documentation, and digital heritage management[6].
Prof.Gaur also served as Director of the National School of Drama[7].
Contributions to digital preservation and cultural heritage
Dr.Gaur's work has focused on digital libraries, documentary heritage preservation, metadata management, electronic resource preservation, and archival digitisation[8]. He contributed to projects involving the development of digital repositories for Indian cultural heritage collections at IGNCA[9].
In 2025, Gaur was associated with the ''Gyan Bharatam'' initiative, which focused on preservation and dissemination of India's manuscript heritage[10]. He also served as editor of the conference publication related to the initiative[11].
Gaur has also participated in discussions concerning the digitisation and modernisation of Sanskrit libraries in India[12].
UNESCO and international work
Dr.Gaur has been associated with initiatives connected to UNESCO's ''Memory of the World'' programme in India. He was involved in efforts related to the inscription of Indian documentary heritage collections in UNESCO regional registers[13]. Collections associated with these initiatives include the ''Ramcharitmanas'', the ''Panchatantra'', and ''Sahṛdayāloka-Locana''[14][15][16].
He has also contributed to UNESCO-related initiatives concerning indigenous and endangered languages[17][18].
In addition, he has held leadership and advisory roles within international professional bodies such as the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)[19] and the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD)[20].
Research and academic work
Gaur has contributed to discussions on research ethics, plagiarism prevention, open access, and electronic theses and dissertations in India[21][22].
