Radical Ventures is a Toronto-based venture capital firm investing in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep tech.[2][3] Founded in 2017, the firm manages approximately US$1.8 billion in assets and maintains close ties to the Vector Institute.[1][4]

Notable investments include Cohere (LLMs),[5] Waabi (autonomous trucking),[6][7] Covariant (robotics),[8] Xanadu (quantum computing),[9] Untether AI (chips),[10] Hebbia,[11] and You.com.[12]

History and Funds

Founders Jordan Jacobs[13] and Tomi Poutanen[14] (previously of Layer 6 AI, acquired by TD Bank Group[15][16]) launched Radical[17] to address the capital gap for Canadian deep tech.[18][19][20] Their US$325 million Fund II (2019) was anchored by CPP Investments and others.[21] Subsequent raises include a US$550 million Fund III (2023), a US$800 million Growth Fund (2024)[22][23] and $650 million raise in 2025.[24][25][1]

Investing across AI infrastructure and vertical applications, Radical supports portfolio companies via its internal "Velocity Team."[26][27] The firm integrates academic expertise, with Fei-Fei Li as a Scientific Partner and Geoffrey Hinton as an advisor.[28][29]

People

Key partners include former TD Bank Group CEO Ed Clark, former McKinsey & Company Global Managing Partner Dominic Barton, and Salim Teja.[30]
