Playa Raya is a Pacific Ocean beach on the southern coast of the Azuero Peninsula in Pedasí District, Los Santos Province, Panama. The beach is located in the same coastal corridor as Playa Venao and the nearby beaches of Madroño and Ciruelo, all of which are recognized for their surf conditions.[1][2]

Geography

Playa Raya lies along the south-facing Pacific coast of the Azuero Peninsula, within Panama's Arco Seco (Dry Arc) climatic region. The Azuero Peninsula's south coast in Los Santos Province is characterized by a series of beaches with yellowish-tan to charcoal-coloured sand backed by hills and dry tropical vegetation.[3] Playa Raya sits a short distance west of Playa Venao in the same beach corridor.[4]

The surrounding Pedasí area is part of Panama's Dry Arc and receives relatively little rainfall during the dry season from January to April compared with other parts of the country.[5]

Surf

Playa Raya is one of several surf beaches along the Pedasí District coastline. The beach is noted, alongside neighbouring Ciruelo and Madroño, for producing hollow tube-shaped waves under optimum swell conditions.[1] The main Pacific surf season on the Azuero coast runs from April to October, when consistent south and south-west swells reach breaks such as Playa Venao, Cambutal and the smaller beaches in between.[2]

The Pedasí District as a whole offers a variety of breaks for surfers; in addition to Playa Venao, the area is known for surf at Ciruelo, Madroño, Raya, El Toro, El Lagarto and Los Destiladeros.[1]

Access

The principal road access to the Azuero Peninsula's south coast is via the highway connecting Pedasí with Playa Venao, which was upgraded and paved in 2021. From Playa Venao, Playa Raya is reached via secondary roads through the surrounding coastal area.[4] Pedasí itself lies approximately 32 km east of Playa Venao and about 360 km from Panama City.[5]

The nearest commercial airport is Pedasí Airport (PDM); the larger Panama City airports (PTY and Albrook) handle long-haul connections.[2]

Environment

Playa Raya is part of a coastal area characterized by dry tropical forest remnants and coastal dry-forest ecosystems typical of the Azuero Peninsula's Pacific slope.[3] The broader Pedasí area is significant for marine biodiversity, with Isla Iguana Wildlife Refuge and Isla Cañas Pacific sea turtle nesting sites both located in the same district.[5]

Development

The southern Azuero coast around Playa Venao and the adjacent beaches, including Playa Raya, has seen gradual residential and tourism development since the 2010s. Playa Venao has been described as one of Panama's most established coastal destinations, while the smaller beaches in the same corridor — including Playa Raya — remain comparatively undeveloped.[4][6]
