Draft:Pinhal da Torre

Pinhal da Torre is a Portuguese family-owned single-estate wine producer located in Alpiarça, in the Tejo wine region of central Portugal. Owned by the Saturnino Cunha family, the estate has been dedicated to viticulture across multiple generations.[1] The winery, built in 1947 at Quinta de São João, is notable for its seven Algerian-design concrete fermentation vats, described as unique in Portugal for their architecture. Pinhal da Torre produces exclusively from its own estate fruit.

History

The Saturnino Cunha family has produced wine in the Ribatejo for several generations. The estate comprises three properties — Quinta de São João,Alqueve, and Águas Vivas — totalling 40 hectares, of which 30 are planted with vines.[1]

The winery at Quinta de São João was built in 1947 and houses seven Algerian-design concrete vats engineered for natural thermal stability and micro-oxygenation through their porous walls. The first commercial bottling took place in 1999.[1] The Ribatejo wine region was redesignated Tejo DOC in 2009.

In 2003, Pinhal da Torre became the first wine producer in Portugal to incorporate Braille script on its wine labels.[2]

Following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Pinhal da Torre was the first Portuguese wine producer to launch a fundraising campaign in support of reconstruction efforts in Haiti, channelling proceeds through Oikos – Cooperação e Desenvolvimento.[1]

Viticulture and winemaking

Pinhal da Torre practices sustainable viticulture following an Annual Biological Viticulture and Sustainable Fertilisation Plan, with a focus on minimal intervention in the winery.[1] The estate works with approximately 20 grape varieties. White varieties include Verdelho, Arinto, Alvarinho, Fernão Pires and Malvasia Fina. Red varieties include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Francisca, Tinto Cão, Sousão, Alicante Bouschet, Ramisco, Baga and Trincadeira.[1]

Harvesting is carried out exclusively between 07:00 and 13:00 to preserve the chemical balance of the fruit at cooler temperatures. Fermentation is guided by wild and indigenous yeasts in the estate's historic concrete vats.[1] Average yields are approximately five tonnes per hectare.

Wines are aged in cellar for a minimum of three years before release. The top labels spend at least three years in French oak before commercialisation, with some references limited to 3,000–4,000 bottles per vintage.[1]

The estate's philosophy is articulated through its proprietary Happy Grapes Program®, which integrates responsible farming practices, human wellbeing and biodiversity conservation.

Wines

The current portfolio includes:

  • IPO (Initial Public Offering) — the estate's flagship wine, produced from Tinta Roriz and Syrah, aged in French oak. The 2008 vintage received 93 points from Robert Parker and was produced in 552 bottles from four barrels.[3]
  • Antagonista and Protagonista — the top range; limited edition author wines with extended wood ageing.[1]
  • Resiliente and Special — limited edition author wines.
  • Resoluto — a structured red with significant ageing potential.
  • Alqueve Reserva — the estate classic, expressing the character of the Tejo terroir.

Pinhal da Torre was the first producer in Portugal to release a wine made exclusively from Grenache (monovarietal).[1]

Critical recognition

The Quinta do Alqueve label gained significant early international recognition. Wine Enthusiast awarded the Quinta do Alqueve 2003 its "Editor's Choice" distinction.[4] Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide described it as one of the most interesting wines from the Tejo region it had encountered, and noted the broader Pinhal da Torre range as distinctive and individualistic. The Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book (2008 edition) listed Pinhal da Torre among its "rising stars".[5]

American importer Robert Kacher, whose portfolio until 2003 consisted exclusively of French wines, added Quinta do Alqueve as a singular exception — the only non-French wine he represented at the time.[1]

In 2026, Grandes Escolhas, Portugal's principal specialist wine publication, published a feature article on Pinhal da Torre, covering the estate's philosophy, portfolio and winemaking approach in depth.[1]

Markets

Pinhal da Torre previously exported up to 93% of its production, with principal markets including the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, China, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland. Following a strategic reorientation during the COVID-19 pandemic, the domestic market now accounts for approximately 50% of sales. Brazil remains the principal export market.[1]

Wine tourism

The estate offers guided visits to vineyards, the historic 1947 winery and the barrel cellar, with wine tasting, at Quinta de São João in Alpiarça.[6]
