Phoenix Medical Systems is an Indian medical device manufacturer based in Chennai. The company makes neonatal and maternal-care equipment and serves as the manufacturing partner for several devices developed by Indian academic institutions and international product-design teams, including the SmartCane mobility aid co-developed with IIT Delhi, the Arise standing wheelchair co-developed with IIT Madras, and the Indian-made version of the Embrace infant warmer.[1][2][3]

History

Phoenix Medical Systems was founded in 1989 in Chennai by V. Sashi Kumar. In its first two decades, the company manufactured infant warmers, incubators and phototherapy units for the Indian hospital market.

In 2008, four Stanford University students designed a low-cost infant warmer for premature babies as part of a graduate design course; the resulting product, marketed as the Embrace Warmer, has been produced for the Indian market by Phoenix Medical Systems since 2011.[4][3]

In 2014, the company became the manufacturing partner for the SmartCane, an ultrasonic mobility aid for blind and partially sighted users developed at IIT Delhi in collaboration with the Saksham Trust and with funding from the Wellcome Trust. Business Standard reported that, through the partnership, the SmartCane was made available in India for around ₹3,000, compared with roughly ₹65,000 for comparable foreign devices.[1][5]

In 2019, Phoenix partnered with IIT Madras's TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development, led by professor Sujatha Srinivasan, to commercialise the Arise standing wheelchair. The Better India reported that the wheelchair was made available for approximately ₹15,000, several times less than the cost of comparable imported devices.[2][6]

Products and operations

Phoenix's product range covers neonatal care, maternal care, assistive devices, and critical-care equipment, including infant warmers, incubators, phototherapy units, delivery tables, and a ventilator introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.[2] The Embrace Warmer, designed by Embrace Innovations as a low-cost alternative to conventional incubators, is manufactured by Phoenix for distribution in India and other low- and middle-income markets.[4][3]

The company operates manufacturing facilities in Sriperumbudur (Tamil Nadu), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh, located in the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone), and Puducherry.
