Paulaner Sunset is a citrus–cola soda marketed in the United States by Dreaming Sunset Inc. in partnership with the Bavarian brewery Paulaner. Known as Spezi in Germany, Sunset is part of the cola-mix category of sodas that has found particular success in Germany.[1] The beverage is produced in Munich and sold in a “Classic” (beet-sugar-sweetened) and a “Zero” (zero sugar, zero calorie) variant [paulaner-sunset.com].
Background
Spezi, a term that describes cola mixed with citrus flavours, often orange, lemon and lime, is a drink category in Germany that has grown in popularity throughout the last decades. The term Spezi, a word for “buddy” or “friend” in Bavarian [2], was trademarked by Brauhaus Riegele, an Augsburg brewery, in 1956 to describe their cola-mix recipe[3]. In 1974 Paulaner licensed the term for the German market and commercialized their own Spezi, which has since become the most popular option in the German cola-mix market. While Paulaner initially started producing it as a non-alcoholic alternative for Oktoberfest tents and beer halls,[4] their Spezi now claims a market share in Germany of >40%.
Because Paulaner’s license for the Spezi name did not extend to the U.S. market, the drink was renamed to Sunset for its expansion to the United States.[5] Initially, Sunset was rolled out in California (availability was limited elsewhere) and later expanded nationwide via e-commerce. Expansion to brick & mortar locations outside of California started in early 2025. [6]
Launch in the United States
Coverage in German and U.S. media identified a father-and-son effort—Matthias and Anton Memminger—working with Paulaner to launch Paulaner Sunset from Los Angeles/Venice, California. Retail debut activity included an announcement of a chain-wide placement at Bristol Farms in Southern California (2024).[7][8]
Subsequent U.S. availability has included direct-to-consumer sales, Amazon listings, and regional grocers; Allrecipes reported broader U.S. availability by mid-2025.[9] Notable launches include Texan premium grocer Central Market.
Product
Both the “Classic” as well as the “Zero” are produced and canned by Paulaner in their Munich brewery.[10] The “Classic” version is sweetened with beet sugar and includes orange and lemon juice.[11] Its recipe is original from 1974. The “Zero” version uses aspartame as its sweetener and has zero calories.[12]
Marketing and branding
The brand and recipe are presented as original from 1974, using the German Paulaner Spezi color palette and typography, a look noted in U.S. reviews.[13]
In August 2025 the company promoted a “Love & Peace” campaign that nodded to Coca-Cola’s 1971 “Hilltop” ad, covered by advertising trade outlets.[14]
In late 2025 SONRA released a limited run of Paulaner Sunset branded sneakers.[15]
Reception
Early U.S. food-media reviews characterized Sunset as lighter and less syrupy than typical American colas, highlighting its citrus finish and use of real sugar/fruit juice. Delish and Sporked recommended the drink’s flavor profile; Allrecipes covered its stateside availability and consumer response. Forbes profiled the soda’s Munich production and “champagne-style” carbonation.[16][5][13][1]
Sponsorships
For the 2025 season, Paulaner Sunset appeared as a sponsor on the MISHUMOTORS Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R in SRO GT America, driven by Mirco Schultis.[17]
