Paulaner Sunset is a citrus–cola soda marketed in the United States by Dreaming Sunset Inc. in partnership with the Bavarian brewery Paulaner. Known as Spezi in Germany, Sunset is part of the cola-mix category of sodas that has found particular success in Germany.^[1] The beverage is produced in Munich and sold in a “Classic” (beet-sugar-sweetened) and a “Zero” (zero sugar, zero calorie) variant [paulaner-sunset.com].

Spezi, a term that describes cola mixed with citrus flavours, often orange, lemon and lime, is a drink category in Germany that has grown in popularity throughout the last decades. The term Spezi, a word for “buddy” or “friend” in Bavarian ^[2], was trademarked by Brauhaus Riegele, an Augsburg brewery, in 1956 to describe their cola-mix recipe^[3].
