Open Audio Codec (OAC) is an upcoming open, royalty-free lossy audio codec developed by Alliance for Open Media. It is positioned as a successor to Opus.
Features
The current specifications for OAC are identical to Opus, with support for sampling rates from 8-48 kHz, bitrates from 6-510 Kbit/s (both constant and variable), mono and stereo support and other features.[1][2]
History
OAC entered development in February 2026. The specifications and reference implementation for OAC were forked from Opus.[1]
Support
A reference implementation of OAC, liboac, is free software licensed under the BSD 3-Clause License.[2]
