O’Brien Group (trading as O’Brien Group Benchtops) is a New Zealand–based manufacturing company specialising in the design and fabrication of kitchen and bathroom benchtops. Headquartered in Mosgiel, near Dunedin, the company operates regional production branches across New Zealand and is a prominent manufacturer within the Australasian benchtop sector.[1]

The company has undergone multiple ownership changes, including a period of corporate ownership under Fletcher Building, before returning to private ownership by members of the founding O’Brien family.

History

The business was started in 1972 by Barry O’Brien, initially operating out of a residential garage on Kinmont Crescent in Mosgiel.[1] As production volume scaled, operations moved to an old flour mill facility near the Hotel Taieri in 1978, and the business was formally incorporated in 1979.[1][2] In 1981, the company relocated to its current 5,500-square-metre manufacturing site on Gow Street to support increasing production demands.[1] Over the following decades, the business expanded to open 10 regional branches throughout New Zealand under the management of Barry and Helen O’Brien.[1]

In mid-2006, the business was sold to Fletcher Building, New Zealand's largest listed company, where it was integrated into Fletcher's Laminex and Formica divisions.[2][3] Under corporate management, the branch footprint eventually downscaled from ten locations to three.[1]

In November 2012, Fletcher Building divested the company back to the founding family, with siblings Peter and Phil O’Brien repurchasing the business to return it to private family ownership under O'Brien Benchtops Ltd.[2][1] The corporate transition resulted in a consolidation at the Mosgiel factory, where 25 roles were retained alongside 25 redundancies, and the business merged operations with Otago Bench Top Specialists.[2]

Operations

O’Brien Group operates its main centralized manufacturing hub in Mosgiel, producing up to 400 benchtop components daily for residential and corporate client markets.[1] The hub facility fabricates custom orders before distributing components to five wholly-owned regional branches (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill) and two majority-shared branch operations in Nelson and Alexandra.[1]
