Ning Yu is a pianist known for her work in contemporary and experimental music. Her projects frequently involve multimedia and interdisciplinary collaboration with composers, performance artists, and visual artists. She is an Associate Professor of Piano and Chamber Music[1] at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Early life and education
Ning Yu was born and raised in Shenyang, China, where she began studying piano at an early age. She later attended the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing before continuing her studies in the United States at Idyllwild Arts Academy in California.
Yu earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Eastman School of Music in 2002, followed by a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Literature from Eastman in 2004. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at Stony Brook University in 2010.
During her graduate studies, Yu became increasingly interested in contemporary repertoire, including works by Frederic Rzewski, György Ligeti, and George Crumb, which influenced her later focus on experimental performance practices.
Career
Yu's work centers on contemporary and experimental music, with an emphasis on expanding the sonic and performative possibilities of the piano. Her practice incorporates extended techniques, mechanical and digital modifications, and the use of alternative sound‑producing objects. She has performed using MIDI controllers, found objects, toys, homemade instruments, and altered pianos, and has participated in projects involving audience‑immersive formats and unconventional staging.
Yu's approach has been shaped by interdisciplinary work, beginning with her participation in the Sundance Institute's theater lab, where she collaborated with directors Lee Breuer and Moisés Kaufman. This led to a decade of touring with the theater production Mabou Mines DollHouse.[2]
Her experimental work has included collaborations with artists such as Yasunao Tone and performances of works by Nam June Paik, including Etude for Pianoforte (1960).
From 2010 to 2021, Yu was a member of Yarn/Wire,[3] a New York-based piano‑percussion quartet. With the ensemble, she premiered numerous new compositions, collaborated with established and emerging composers, and participated in more than twenty album releases. During this period, the group also founded the Yarn/Wire International Summer Institute.[4]
Yu has performed at venues including Lincoln Center,[5] the Library of Congress,[6] the Museum of Modern Art, the Kölner Philharmonie, Muziekgebouw, Shanghai Symphony Hall, the Museum of the Dog,[7] and the Barbican Centre. She has appeared in projects with artists such as Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, Bryce Dessner, Sufjan Stevens, and Peter Dinklage.
Yu has been an Associate Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. since 2016.
