Draft:Nicholas Wyn Roberts

  • Comment: Unclear if Roberts is notable per WP:GNG. Main references are obituaries that seem to be family/friend generated (so primary, not independent nor reliable); I note repeated phrasing "Nick found his true calling as professor of architecture ...". Is there any significant coverage about Roberts in reliable independent secondary sources with reputations for accuracy and fact-checking? This should be distinct from works by Roberts. Nicholas Wyn Roberts (1948-2013) was a British-born American architect and professor. As a member of the faculty of Woodbury University and SCI-Arc, Roberts taught theory and studio classes in architecture and urbanism from 1989 until his death from ALS in 2013. As an architect, he collaborated with architects including James Ingo Freed, Rafael Moneo, and Norman Foster on landmark projects in Southern California.[1]

Early life and education

Roberts was the only child of architect and professor David Wyn Roberts and architect Margaret MacDonald Baird. David Roberts was a professor of architecture at the School of Architecture at Cambridge University. Roberts was raised in Cambridge and immigrated to the United States in 1978.[2]

He received a BA (1969) and MA (1973) in Architecture from Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1974, he received a Diploma from the Architectural Association (AA) in London.[1] His thesis, 'Peterchurch, the Development of a Rural Community,' explored possibilities of sustainable energy and self-sufficient communities.[3]

Career

In 1981, he married architect Cory Buckner. They remodeled and built several houses together and were very active in establishing a preservation movement in Crestwood Hills, a modernist community in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Their only child is Bryony Wyn Roberts, an urban designer and public artist.[4]

From 1985 to 2003, Roberts was Associate and Project Manager for Leo A Daly. His projects included John Spoor Broome Library, California State University at Channel Islands with design architects Foster and Partners, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles with lead architect Rafael Moneo, and the Los Angeles Convention Center Expansion with design architects Pei Cobb Freed.[1]
