Comment: Most of the references are trivial mentions. It does not increase the notability to see sources about univerities in Idaho that briefly discuss it or news stories about a naming dispute. Somepinkdude (talk) 02:40, 18 December 2025 (UTC)

NewU University is an undergraduate private university in Washington, D.C., United States. It was established in 2019 and offers full-time programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees.
History
The institution was established as a 501(c)(3) organization nonprofit in 2019 and began enrolling undergraduate students in 2022. It was founded by Stratsi Kulinski, a former president of the American University in Bulgaria, to offer 3-year Bachelor's degree with 120 credit hours.
Academics
NewU University is licensed by the Washington DC Higher Education Licensure Commission and is a candidate for accreditation by Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).[1]
The school offers 5 programs in business and psychology: BA in Creativity and Innovation Management, BA in Entrepreneurship, BA in Psychology, BS in Computer and Data Science, and BS in Business Sustainability. The educational model of the school makes use of best practices in higher education and introduces incremental innovations, such as block schedule, tuition freeze, and business core curriculum.[2][3] The school also follows a stress-free philosophy.[4]
The school's first students were accepted in 2022 with fixed tuition rates and the ability to earn a bachelors degree in three years.[5] They graduated in June 2025.[6]
The school is a member of the College-in-3 consortium of the University of Pennsylvania, a collaborative initiative composed of colleges and universities examining the feasibility and academic structure of three-year undergraduate degree programs. The consortium focuses on reducing time to degree completion while maintaining academic rigor, affordability, and post-graduate outcomes for students.[7]
NewU University continues to offer traditional 120-credit undergraduate degree programs, in contrast to proposed 90-credit accelerated degree models that have been affected by changes to accreditation standards. These accreditation shifts emerged amid higher education policy changes implemented during the Trump administration, which increased federal scrutiny of accrediting agencies and alternative degree pathways.[8]
Controversy
In 2023, a naming dispute arose between NewU University and the University of Idaho related to the proposed use of the name NewU Inc. by the University of Idaho. The Idaho State Department of Education had announced plans to form a nonprofit entity called NewU Inc. to facilitate the University of Idaho’s intended acquisition of the University of Phoenix. Shortly after that announcement, NewU University objected to the use of the name on grounds that it caused confusion in the higher education marketplace and demanded the University of Idaho discontinue its use of the name and make payments for reputational and financial harm. Documents released through public records requests show that NewU’s legal representatives initially sought a one-time payment of $25,000 and weekly payments thereafter until the name use ceased. In response, the University of Idaho stated that it would drop the NewU branding. The dispute was highlighted as part of broader scrutiny over the University of Idaho’s controversial bid to acquire the University of Phoenix. [9][10] [11]
Other initiatives
NewU also proposed a charter school designed to merge high school and college coursework, with students earning 80 college credits by the end of 12th grade and completing their bachelor's degree with one additional year of study[12]. The proposal was accepted by the DC Public Charter School Board on May 19, 2025 and is open for public comment.[13]
