Myles Davis is an American former college basketball player who played guard for the Xavier Musketeers men’s basketball team.

Early life and high school career

Davis is from Plainfield, New Jersey. He is the son of Laura and Sam Davis. He attended St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark and transferred after his freshman year to St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City, where he emerged as one of the top high school basketball players in New Jersey. During the 2009–10 season, he averaged more than 20 points per game and led St. Peter’s Prep to the Non-Public A State Championship game. He was named by The Star-Ledger as its North Jersey Player of the Year in 2010.[1]

During his recruitment process, Davis noted the influence of his family on his development as a player. His cousin, Brandin Knight, a former college basketball player and assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh at the time, was described by Davis as a close confidant, stating, “Me and Brandin, instead of cousins, we’re like brothers.”[2]

In 2020, Davis was named by NJ.com to its First Team of the 2010s for New Jersey boys’ basketball, a retrospective selection recognizing the most outstanding high school players in the state during the decade, based on performance and impact at the scholastic level.[3]

Davis later transferred to Notre Dame Preparatory School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where he reclassified to the Class of 2012 and competed on the national prep school circuit.[4]

Recruitment

A consensus four-star recruit, Davis received scholarship offers from several major programs, including Georgetown, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Villanova, and Connecticut. In 2011, he committed to Xavier University.[5]

Discussing his playing style during the recruitment process, Davis described himself as a versatile backcourt player, saying, “I think I’m a combo. I think when I go to college, the coaches won’t forget what my jump shot is, but I’ll have to develop my point guard skills.”[6]

College career

NCAA eligibility issues

Before making his collegiate debut, Davis was ruled ineligible by the NCAA due to the invalidation of several core academic courses taken at Notre Dame Prep. The ruling was controversial, as multiple players from the same institution who took identical coursework were deemed eligible. The decision delayed Davis’s on-court career at Xavier.[7][8]

Xavier University

Davis eventually became a regular contributor for the Xavier Musketeers, playing primarily as a shooting guard. He competed in both the Atlantic 10 and Big East conferences following Xavier’s conference realignment. During the 2014–15 season, he helped Xavier reach the NCAA Tournament and recorded multiple double-digit scoring performances in conference play.[9]

During his time at Xavier, Davis was frequently cited by teammates and media as a vocal leader within the program. In preseason coverage ahead of the 2016–17 season, he was described as one of the team’s leaders following Xavier’s success in the Big East Conference.[10]

Over his Xavier career, Davis scored 930 points, along with 245 assists and 80 steals.[11] He also earned Big East weekly honors during conference play.[12]

In September 2016, Davis was suspended indefinitely from the Xavier basketball program following allegations related to a domestic dispute involving property damage. The university cited violations of team and institutional conduct policies.[13][14]

Davis later reached a plea agreement and did not receive jail time or probation.[15]

Reinstatement

In January 2017, Xavier head coach Chris Mack announced that Davis had been reinstated to the program after meeting university and legal requirements.[16][17]

Departure from Xavier

Davis returned to action but appeared in only three games following his reinstatement. In January 2017, he announced via social media that he was leaving the program, stating that he had decided to “move on from Xavier and start a new chapter.”[18][19]

Playing style

Davis described himself as a combo guard, capable of playing both on and off the ball. He was known for his perimeter shooting, transition play, and use in pick-and-roll offense.[20]
